Has anyone had this happen yet???
« on: April 30, 2007, 11:51:56 AM »

I just bought an Autumn Haze "06 SEUC and was riding it this weekend and after I started it and was rolling, I looked down and the neither the Speedo or the Tach was working. The security light and the engine light were also still on. The rest of the guages worked, gas, voltage etc. Voltmeter read about 14. Shut it off, restarted it,everything good. I've had to do this on a couple of other occasions and it seemed fine after that>>>> HELP >>>>What's going on? Called Dealer and gave them the VIN and no recalls on that VIN. I know that there were some issues on Regulator and Ign.switches for the '06's??  AS ALWAYS!!! Thanks Greg

I had this happen with an '04 Heritage. It would happen off and on. Everytime I'd take it in to get it checked it would be working ok. They finally said that they found a loose connection and got it fixed. I sold the bike so don't know how it all turned out. I'd hit a deer with this bike a few months before and always thought that it may have had something to do with it. Sorry I can't be of help.

I think you might have started it too soon after switching on the ignition.  When you switch on, everything gets initialised - you can see the speedo & tach needles move as it happens.   If I start my Sporty before that's finished, the instruments go crazy.

Agree with Eqcons, turn on the ingnition, but dont start,  theres a little lite on the speedo face, that will go off after a few seconds, then you start. Hopefully this solves your problem.

The bike should not be started before that light on the speedo goes out.  When you put the run/stop switch into run, after you turn on the ignition, you'll see the light, along with you'll here the distinctive "hum" of the fuel pump priming the injectors.  Also during that time that the light is on, the ECM is doing it status check of the of the electrical components of the bike...starting the bike before the light goes out, could cause the ECM to give false readings and cause problems...

There was a service bulletin about this very thing 5 or 6 years ago. It became important because of the police bikes. Officers were being told to wait until everything clears and goes out before starting the motor. This is not desirable in an emergency situation.

The service bulletin said there was no reason to wait, hit the switch and crank it. I will see if I can dig that up to post.

I thought that it wasn't necessary to wait, and I was told on the carburated bikes that was true, but on the fuel injected, it's primarily to give the fuel pump the chance to pressurize the injectors.  I must have caught my ECM mid cycle one time on my 02 Ultra, cuz I just jumped on the bike and "tried" to start it and the starter just ran.  I turned the ignition off, turned it back on and let it go through the cycle and it started right up.  Thought I had a problem and told it to the dealer what had happened and he told me that I probably caught the ECM mid-cycle while the fuel pump was pressurizing the system and it shut the injectors off. Never had a problem after that because I waited.  I don't doubt that there was a service bulletin because you probably have to hit it just right to do what I did.  But in all actuallity, it doesn't take that long to be an issue.  Maybe 5-10 secs?  It takes a cop longer than that to put his sunglasses and gloves on.   ::)

I did some more searching on the TC88 Yahoo site where it was initially posted. The link to the file is there, but the file was not. I should have a copy of the file soon. I'll post it when I get it. I may be wrong, but that's how I remember the story unfolding.

My '06 was blowing fuses and that is what happened.  Sometimes other stuff wouldn't work either.  Turned out to be a short in the system.

I pack fuses as a precaution, but we think we finally found the short yesterday after several false attempts over time.

You may still want to take it in (I'd call first so you're not standing around being "tempted" by all the chrome) and have them check the codes on the speedo.  If there were some issues, they can usually pull them off the speedo.  Better to be safe than sorry.
