Just got my Big Red in October, now I want a SG. Or do I?
« on: March 26, 2012, 12:50:17 PM »

I have a beautiful 2011 Big Red, 3000 miles on it.  Rode to Slidell yesterday for the Bayou Thunder event.  I woke up this morning wanting a CVO Street Glide instead.  Maybe it was the Bacon and Pineapple pizza slathered with Louisiana Hot Sauce I ate before bed.

I love the big red, however I don't ever use the tour-pak for anything more than sunscreen and a water bottle.  Got used to my '03 FL without the tour-pak, it was a lot more nimble and a lot lighter.  Have considered the quick detach kit but I prolly won't ever put the tp back on once it is off and I think the hardware looks cheap.  My wife can't ride with me anymore due to nerve and joint damage from chemo so the long haul equipment isn't really needed.  I stay within a couple hundred miles from home on my rides now since she can't go with me.

Not quite ready to post it for sale yet.  Would like some feedback here before I do.

If any of y'all could make a change, would you, and why?

Thanks
Sledge

Were it me, I would detach the TP, change the shocks (and maybe the seat) and call it a day. Not all TP quick-detach setups look cheap. There guys on this site who's jobs look great. (And, I ride a '10 SESG)

I say after purchasing the 2012 SG that you should get one.  I have rode my friends 2011.5 Ultra just like yours except her's is the blue and midnight blue and short of her having a more comfortable seat..I really like how much lower my scooter is and all that attitude mine seems to have. I know we have the same motor but mine rides and handles like a Porsche and hers feels like a Cadillac. Taking the tour pak off doesn't change some of the differences.  You really need to ride one first. Just my .02 cents.

Here's my 2 cents...you'll take a hit on what they'll give you on a trade.  So, if it were me, I'd take the TP off, buy a chopped windshield, and get some shocks that will lower the rear.  Take the money you would have spent on the '12 SESG and buy a custom solo seat.  Other than sitting a little lower, there's really no diff between your bike and a SG...except the cosmetics.

Will prolly sell the Ultra to an individual and buy a slightly used SG instead of trade with the stealership.

Heck I may just sell the Ultra and not buy another bike.  I know it sounds crazy but it's just not as much fun without the wifey.

That question you are going to have to answer for yourself first... no sense getting another bike ifyou're not into riding anymore. :nixweiss:

my wife got to where she cant ride anymore - back cant take it [disks etc]

she can handle whole days in the sidecar and not have any troubles at all

its not conventional, they are hard to get [hard to get complete, the big part is easy to get] they dont make them anymore so you either have to learn a LOT or go with a liberty, they are a HUGE pita to remove and install [to make it work RIGHT you have to change the tree going both ways, ie take the ENTIRE front end apart both ways] - if you try it and get cheap and use a solo tree you will hate it - it gaurantee it.

but if you can get her in it and she does not freak out - she will find she can ride all day and not be damaged, they are 10 times smoother than trikes, the things have over 6" of vertical suspension travel.

they are expensive and odd - but there is NOTHING so rare probably one hd hack for every 150 cvo ultras or even less

Sidecar is a great thought but my wife can't sit in any position for more than 20 or 30 minutes.  It really sux.

I love to ride but....

Ok, momentary insanity is now over.  NOT selling my bike.  Taking off tp.

If I sold my bike cuz my wife can't go with me I'd be drooling over every bike on the road plus my 2 year Baggers subscription would be like salt on a cut every month.

Geez what was I thinking?

Now for a post about dropping it!
