So, I figured with 15K on the SE lifters I would change them out. Decided to try the S&S hydraulics with the travel limiters.
My push rods are Screamin Eagle adjustable's with 24 TPI.

The SE push rods call for 2.5 turns after getting zero lash.
At about 2 turns and 1 flat the push rod is opening the valve and at 2.5 turns the valve is definitely open.

Is this normal?
Do the travel limiters make it feel like a bad initial adjustment?
Do I need to do the pre-load a different way?

I the have the same setup, followed the s+s instructions, including making them a half a turn looser, it does appear to work, still have some noise, but
I beleave this to be more down to piston slap rather than from the top end.

The bike somtimes sits for a couple of weeks between rides, before fitting the HLT2 kit it would sound like a bag of nails on startup, now sounds like I only switched her off a few minutes earlier.

We have no problem with that lifter here whatsoever.
Perhaps S&S has help on their site?

Duane... The S&S lifter without travel limiters has .200 of plunger travel.  2.5 turns with 24 tpi pushrods equals .104...which is approx. center of the total travel...and right where you want to be...

But...The S&S lifter with travel limiters has .100 of plunger travel.  That's the point of using the travel limiter - to limit the plunger travel.  So when using limiters in the lifters with 24 tpi pushrods, use 1.25 turns, which equals .052...which is the approx. center of total travel, and where you want to be when using travel limiters.

Talked to S&S today and this is what they said.

S&S lifter with travel limiters - pushrod adjustment, with 24 TPI pushrods

From zero lash with piston extended, 3 additional turns, should lift valve from seat.
Let sit to bleed lifter down.

After sit – shorten pushrod to zero lash with piston collapsed.
Shorten 1 additional turn.

Without physically doing it yet, that sounds right about where it will be with Scott's suggestion.

That would do it...

One turn down (longer) from the extended plunger or one turn up (shorter) from a collapsed plunger - either gets you there...   :2vrolijk_21:
