Strange oil pressure problem
« on: April 15, 2012, 04:23:30 PM »

I have a 2012 SESG with 2000 km (1200 miles) on it. It has been fine until recently. After the 1600 km service all was fine for a week. After riding for awhile the oil pressure goes to zero and the oil light comes on. There is an awful smell from the bike. The motor makes a ticking and rattling noise and the temp on the LCD dipstick is 310 degrees.

The dealer couldn't duplicate the problem when they checked it out so they gave it back to me. They checked oil pressure and checked for codes but there were none.  This has happened three times and now it's back at the dealer. I rode it until the problem occured and rode it in yesterday so they could see for themselves. I got 30 miles before it happened. The tech said he would check out the cam area and also inspect the oil pump. Very disappointing for a $36,000 bike. I told the fealer I didn't want the bike back until the problem was solved.

Any ideas or anyone see this before?

 are you sure they put oil back in it...30 miles without noise might be normal for one with the Syn3... :nixweiss:

If the oil pressure went to zero and the bike started stinking, AND the oil temp was 310 degrees, I'd say the engine is damaged now.  Stay on 'em and find out how many parts they are having to replace.  Also, since they are likely going into the cam chest, I would request a report on the crank runout, as that is probably what took out the other parts.  If they've got any sense, they'll do that anyway, but not all dealers have sense.

If you rode any appreciable distance with your oil temperature at 310 and no oil pressure, I'd be concerned about the piston skirts/cylinder walls, as well as cam chest issues...     :nervous:

At 310 degrees and no oil pressure,,,,I'd be extremely concerned about the entire engine !

Why worry...It had Syn 3 in it!!! But if it was low or even out of oil with dyno, I would worry alot!! Syn 3 is magic, I've read about it on the internet!! My HD dealer also said it was the best for HD bikes of any synthetic motor oil.

Offer it to the owner of the shop for him to ride to work everyday for a month. When it seizes up on him he'll finally think its a problem. ;D

If you have an oil cooler it's possible the oil cooler is plugged. You only see the problem when the bike gets warm and the oil adapter opens the passage to route the oil to the cooler. Everything looks fine until the bike gets hot then oil pressure takes a dive downward.

Happened to me after a lifter failed and the shop replaced the cams/lifters/oil pump.  They cleaned out all the oil passages but missed th cooler. I had to remove and clean the cooler, after that problem solved!
