2012 FLHXSE3 Rear Suspension Upgrade
« on: May 01, 2012, 09:08:10 PM »

Just got my FLHXSE3 and noticed that the Harley rear suspension is definitely improved over the old air suspension.  Since I've never compared the new suspension to Progressive or Bitubo's, I was wondering what everyone thought of the HD adjustable rear suspension.  The front suspension, from what I've read is a no brainer.  (Buy Progressive or Traxxion)  Just not sure what to do on the rear, if anything.  I'll be two up loaded to stripped down solo.

Ride it a while, then you will know. I think most are incredibly happy with the HD offerings since10. I know I am.

I have been happy with the rear shocks.  I ride solo, 2 up, and sometimes pull a bunkhouse.  I vary the load for all scenarios - took a bit to dial in with 2 up - more of the rider being happy than I.

IMO, and this is my second SESG ('10 and now a '12), these are the best shocks the MoCo has come out with. I like them so much, I haven't found any reason to want to change them out for aftermarket ones.  I like they way they dial in, handle road irregularities, and just in general, handle the ride over all.  Give them a chance, I think you'll agree, no need to replace.

I had a set of newer Progressive 940's I kept from my last bike. I like the stock shocks better!! The only problem with the stock shocks is they run out of adjustment. 2-up, loaded with tour pak etc, I will bottom out on occasion.

I am about 200lbs and ride solo.  Do you guys use the suggested settings in the manual or adjust higher or lower?  Thanks for the input.

this is timely info for me as well.  Only have 400 miles on her, but so far so good.  I did have the 3-3 Ohlins on my 09 SERG and liked them a lot.  If there is not need to spend the dough on shocks i can always come up with something else. Someone please help me....

I see no reason to replace the rear shocks... once they got rid of the air suspension shocks and went to the adjustable spring shocks on the rear, I have no complaints about them. I have mine set on 9, which is perfect for me.

I talked to Mike at Traxxion yesterday and he set me up with a install dealer of theirs in Iowa.  Only a 3 hour drive up there, so I'll probably go ahead and let them put the AK-20's in.  I think the rear shocks so far are just fine.  I see that NGH is running his on 9, what is the most common for solo and the most common for two up?
