MoCO NEW FORMULA FOR SYN 3?
« on: May 04, 2012, 05:14:05 PM »

I know this been subject has been hashed an rehashed.
I received an E-mail from HD that I receive from time to time.
On this particular ad it stated they a new formula for the Syn 3 ,to check it out?
Tried to look it up at HD.COM but could not find any thing about it.
Anyone know anything about this if you received the same thing from the MOCO?

Yeah, I got the same e-mail. This almost says they knew that the original formula could be better, and it only took them what, eight years to acknowledge same. I don't care if its free, I will continue to use what makes me all warm and fuzzy:Mobil 1 V-Twin or Redline or ...

They probably just found some other company to mix it up for them.  Perhaps in China.

It's in the online catalog, just do a search for "syn3".  It now stays fresh longer.  That is the first time I've ever seen that terminology applied to a motor oil; sounds more like an ad for an air freshener.  You can tell the blurb was written by a nontechnical person with no knowledge of the subject, and I especially like where they say it is manufactured by H-D engineers.  I guess Citgo doesn't make it anymore, they whip it up in a lab in the engineering department in Milwaukee.  And I guess they don't know about the Amsoil and Mobil 1 certifications of their oils that also meet the requirements for all three holes.  Oh, thats right, they really mean they (Harley) haven't certified them, not that they don't really meet requirements.  Same BS story they used for years to tell us not to use any synthetic in their engines, back when all they had was HD360 dino oil.

I would have to guess that they have seen a drop in sales for SYN3 as more people opt for one of the other brands, so they decided to tweak the additive package and proclaim it all new and improved.  At least they didn't use this tweak to adjust the price upward, like they usually do.  Still $11.95 per quart MSRP.

Before anyone takes my post as a knock on SYN3 itself, as opposed to a knock on the clowns in Milwaukee, be advised that I personally believe SYN3 is a good motor oil.  It beats the heck out of a lot of other products on the market, including HD360 as well as synthetics from several well known names.  However, I will stick with Mobil 1 V-Twin in my engine, and appropriate specific function lubes in the other holes.  I have good reasons for my choice that have nothing to do with how good SYN3 is or isn't.  To each his own.

halfcirclej, HD (also  known as Hundred Dollars) should be working on beefing up their engines especially all the lousy crankshafts I have been reading about instead of wasting time putting out advertising or sending emails about a new blend of oil. My friend went 180,000 miles on his 2001 twin cam 88 (I know they are a lot less stressed and run cooler) on HD 20-50 Dino oil. It finally died when the balancers went out. Sometimes I wonder if I am wasting my money on Amsoil or Redline. CAHDBIKER

This is just another example of the mothership giving us a bandaid to cover up a shotgun wound.

That would be funnier if it weren't the truth.   :sauer005:

Amen, brother!  You are a wise man, no doubt about it.  Here's to all the right lubes in all the right holes!   :drink:  Have a sad story in that regard involving Solarcaine (with lidocaine) Gel... better shared at a later time.   :furious2:

Still made by Citgo.
If you are a user of the old SYN3 you should be happy.
They improved the additive pack to reduce shearing.
This is a good oil, better than some, not as good as others.
Leaving it at that.

The Sun Oil Co., had been under contract for a long time to "mix" the oil for the Moco.
Sounds like a "new and improved" Tide laundry detergent commercial. :D :D
