Fluids for primary and transmission?
« on: May 16, 2012, 01:24:31 PM »

Dealer recently did 1K service on my bike and Syn3 in all 3 holes but bike is still noisy, I recently helped a buddy change fluids on his 2010 RKC and after putting better fluids in his primary and transmission his bike is MUCH quieter.

What do you guys recommend for the primary and transmission on the CVO's? I have a quart of HD Formula + and a Quart of Belray for the transmission. Does the CVO need or use anything different, this was left over from when I had the Ultra, I usually change my own fluids, but the 1K service was thrown in the deal with the skunk so I let them have at it.

Thanks

UH-OH an oil thread!!!!  Well here goes.......I like Redline Shockproof in the trans and Redline Primary fluid for the primary....it seemed to shift better and easier to find neutral after I switched......get ready for a few million other opinions also!!

Hello,

I used to worry about that noise crap also.
I used what I thought where great oils in all 3 holes.
My 2011 still went bad at 18,000 miles.

Good luck with what ever you choose as some fluids do make things quieter.
I just wonder if they do any good with the inferior parts that are now used on these bikes.

I traded the 11 in and got a 12, just using syn 3 in every hole since it does not seem to me to matter what fluid I use on crappy parts.

I mean really, how many motors on this site have went bad because of a true oil issue.
Not a lot from what I have read over the years.

Just sayin,

I really do hope what ever you choose gives you a piece of mind and quiets things down a bit, cause I think that's all it will do.

Take care and ride safe.

Big Dave

The stuff you have on hand is fine, but you'll need more than one quart of the Formula +.  For the tranny, a lot of folks on here (myself included) use Redline Shockproof.  In fact, I use Redline products exclusively, but that's not to say they are superior to others, just that they are one of the top, IMO.  The primary is not real particular, as long as you use an oil that is not harmful to wet clutches, which are most motorcycle oils and automatic transmission fluids.  I just use Redline because I can order it all from one place and be done with it:  http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/category/MotorcyclePowerpacks  I initially got their "powerpack" package, + one additional quart of Primary fluid (the primary takes 38oz with a normal fluid change, more if you completely drain the primary case by removing the primary cover completely)  The funnel included is pretty handy.  From that point forward, I just get the specific product I need for the upcoming service.  The last service, I used the 20W60 because we're coming up on summer here in Alabama and it's HOT here.  Subjectively, I think the top end of the motor is a bit quieter than when I was using the 20W50.  Either is fine.  I also order the K&N chrome oil filter at the same time...I do this not because it is necessarily the cheapest place to get everything, but just that it's more convenient for me to get it all in one box.  You can find the filter cheaper if you buy in bulk, but I don't do that.  There is nothing WRONG with Syn3, I just choose to purchase other product for various reasons.

I do think the transmission is happier with a product specific to the application, like the Belray, Redline Shockproof, Amsoil, etc.  Mine is certainly easier to find neutral, and is as quiet as a HD transmission can be.  My dealer even recommends Redline Shockproof...one of the few aftermarket lubricant's they will keep on hand.

Dave is right...I've been on here for a while, and I've yet to hear of a single motor failure due to inferior lubricant choice...or none that I can recall.  I use Redline for my own reasons:  I don't want to give HD any more of my money than I am forced to; I do my own sevice; it's easier for me to pick up a box full of oils/filters outside of my basement door than making a trip to the HD dealer, or elsewhere; I know I'm using a good product that has worked well for me.

If my engine/transmission/primary takes a dump, it will be because of inferior parts or assembly, not because I'm using brand X or Y oil.

You know, I am like you.
I do or did believe in quality oil.
Guess I am just still upset over spending so much time thinking about my oil choices and still have a failure.

I always did like gear oil in trans and a good syn in the motor.

After my first free 1,000 service at the shop I will still prob put my normal choice of oil in the bike cause I have so much of it left over. HAHA
I am just not putting any more deep thought into what I put in there.

I am so very sure you understand.

Take care and ride safe my friend.

I am not concerned of failure, was just curious really if for any reason the CVO's should use anything different than the standard bikes. My reason in asking about what I have on hand is because it's just sitting there, so if it will quiet things down some then why not right?

My 110 makes a hell of a lot more noise than the 103 on my Ultra did, lol   :huepfenlol2:

Thanks for the feedback, I will look into the redline products, I'm sure the sync is fine for the motor, I just think more specific fluids for the primary and trans would be better, but what the hell do I know.

Fire...I think you are correct in your thinking...specific product for specific needs.  It's not worth obsessing over particular brands though...other than the Redline Shockproof.  If you get some, you'll see what I mean...it's the most "clingy" stuff I've ever seen, and slicker than Owl Chit.  It really does quieten the tranny down some.

The 110's are noisy though...you'll get used to what's "normal" for your bike and your hearing, and know if it gets "different".

But, to answer your question...No, the CVO bikes are no different in needs than other HD bikes.  They just run hotter and a little noisier due to the bigger motor.  The older type 103" motors were noisier than the 88" stocker, and the 110" motor is noisier than the newer 96/103" motors.  That's my observation, at any rate.

Amsoil 20-50 in all 3 holes.  Works great.

Thanks for the information!  :2vrolijk_21:

We have a trip to the Dragon in July, so even though it won't need all new fluids, I will just drop one of those kits in 20/60W into the bike at 5K miles before our trip, I'm at 1,300 now because of a lot of rain but before the trip I should have hit 5K
