Flywheel assembly
« on: May 22, 2012, 12:03:49 AM »

I have a flywheel question.
The flywheel assembly in my 09 FXDFSE is 23729-07A which is also advertised as a SE stoker flywheel.
I note in later 110" s the flywheel has been replaced by 23912-07B.
I guess they are interchangeable , can anyone tell me the difference?
Are there any other variations (part no.s) which are interchangeable in the late models?
Thanks

Been doing some more research!
The 23912-07B is for softails.
There is another flywheel assembly for 07-later Dyna and Touring.
23601-05A
Whats the difference between 23601-05A and 23729-07A?
The later assembly looks like it has the tapered rods and the earlier one hasn't.
Any other differences?
Is later better or is it production cost cutting?

Whats the difference between 23601-05A and 23729-07A?

The 601 has forged wheels and the 729 has cast wheels.  The forged wheels are said to maintain better tension on the crankpin than the cast wheels do.  Price is also double for the forged set.

Thanks glens
So after welding the crankpin, they'd be pretty much equivalent?

Thanks lever
I followed your build from start to finish but hadn't been right thru the photobucket.
Does the softail flywheel have CVO stamped on it?
Was that your reflection in the thottle plate?

I don't think I'd go so far as to say that.

The difference between cast and forged is night and day. I would not say they would be equivalent!!!! No way no how. The difference is in the way the steel is made. Forged is a lot stronger and costs more to manufacture. Now while welding either will make them stronger, if I have my choice I am going with forged even if it is TWICE THE PRICE!!!!!

I have the 23729-07A in the bike according to the parts catalog.
(I havn't been in there yet)
I got another 23729-07A (with rods which had tight spots ) off ebay in California for a good price.
It is on its way to Dark Horse Crankworks .
Dark Horse crankpin , bearing and H-beam rods with these flywheels and pro-plug weld and true and then back to me in Australia .
Should work out OK for me !
The forged flywheels would have been nice but there don't seem to be any about ????
If I have a flywheel assembly thats trued and welded it shouldn't go anywhere irrespective of whether the flywheels are forged or cast ??

Darkhorse does good work.  You should be fine...  Be mindful of your pistons if you go from tapered rods to full width H-Beam rods...

I was going to get some pistons to Dark Horse too , to have them ground out for the rods and to have them balanced with the flywheels.
I was going with the SE pistons but I havn't found any specs on the valve relief.
I am going with 2.125 intake valves in the standard heads.
If you can use these pistons with SE heads I guess they should be OK?
