Check Engine Light On
« on: May 21, 2012, 08:13:02 PM »

While riding yesterday my check engine light came on. I also notice that my cruise control is not working ether. It was a hotter than normal day and it came on while i was standing still for about 5 minutes. I shut the bike off and it would turn off but after about 5 minutes it would come on again.

I have checked all the fuses and i even remapped just in case. Still the light comes on after about 5 minutes at idle or riding.

I have a 2011 CVO SG with the FULL SAC 2 in cores with just over 30 000 km. The rest of the bike is stock.

Any ideas ????? Before I go to the dealer.

Thanks in advance.

Just went out and disconnected the battery and waited 5 min.

Reconnected and started bike. Light came on again. :(

I had that on my 2002 EGU before. Whatever the issue was it cleared itself out of the memory and the light eventually went out. I'm not sure if HD uses the same principle as some auto makers nowadays with computers and all but check your brake lights. I know on my truck if I lose a bulb the CC will not work.

You need to check for DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes) to see what triggered the check engine light.  You can do it yourself or you can get the dealership to do it with their scan tool.  If you want to do it yourself, follow the instructions in the attached file.

I would guess you are going to find it showing a code related to the throttle by wire.  The cruise control has been shut down since the control unit doesn't trust the reading from the throttle sensor.  Or something like that.

I had this exact issue on my bike after changing the bars.  After much consternation we found that we simply had a couple of wires crossed.

PO77 (I THINK) was the code. The dealer said it the switch (on grip) for the cruise control is defective.

What a time for it to go. Leaving in the morning for Daytona, Key West, New Orleans, Snake, Dragon and Nashville.

Approximately 7000 KM in 11 days and no cruise control....ish.

I think it probably was P0577, Cruise Control Input High.  Before writing it off as a defective switch and riding all that way without cruise, try cleaning the switch with some electronic contact cleaner or even some WD40.  Sometimes moisture in the switch will cause this code.  After cleaning/drying the switch, clear the code if it's still there (see the instructions I posted earlier) and see if it stays cleared and the cruise works.  That has in fact fixed some bikes with the same issue.

BTW, why didn't the dealer replace the switch if they think it's defective?  If they knew you were leaving on a long trip, they should have made a real effort to locate a switch, and failing that they could liberate one from another bike in inventory.  I actually remember the days when some places would do stuff like that for customers.

Maybe when we all stop buying from places that don't provide great customer service, some will get the message. :nixweiss:  Yeah, I know.  I'm dreaming again.

I just read an article in the last AIM magazine that talked about similar problems, plus weird idle, stalling etc. Apparently they found the connection on the back the of the throttle body (just behind the air cover) to be be intermittent. They suspected vibration as the cause.
They cleaned the contacts and used dialectic grease and problem appears to be solved. A plastic tie around the TB and over the connection might assure it stays put.
Something to check out as I've read a few similar problems recently. FWIW twinotter
