Ok I am going to rant abit
« on: June 01, 2012, 10:32:34 AM »

I am so sick and tire of changing oil and having a mess all over the below area of the filter. I have tried just about everything to improve this with poor success. Now I know there are people out there that have this licked but with a fan oil cooler on my bike it makes it that much worse.

Trust me I have been creative on different methods.

Is there some company that has come up with a relocation install?

The one idea that I am going to try on the next oil change is to put some real soapy water in a spray bottle and coat the chit out of the area under the filter so maybe the oily mess will just run-off.

anyway thanx for letting me rant.

bub

Oh btw can you spray the area with carb cleaner....is it paint safe.

I don't have the fan..but still hated the mess. After draining the oil, I use http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448774818&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374309397203&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374309397203&locale=en_CA&bmUID=1338563190448&bmLocale=en_CA and drill a 1/8" hole in the bottom corner of the filter, then the top, let it drain for a while.....and there is very little spillage, if any after 'practicing' a few times. Hope that helps!

Very easy. Take the box the filter came in and open it up completly. Now slip it under the filer and remove your filter. The oil will run down the cardboard and into your drain pan. Hole the cardborad in place and install your new filter. Remove the cardboard and clean with a little carb cleaner and you are good to go!!!!

Be Safe

Found this on another site from a Roadglide member, sounds easy enough.

Get a Coffee-Mate jug, cut the end off, put the filter wrench in, put the ratch in small side, place jug and filter wrench on filter, loosen, let oil drip, remove, minimal clean up - cost $3.75 for Coffee-Mate. Drink coffee when finished.

just did my 1000 mile service I used a piece of card board much like the DCFIREMAN says did not spill a drop, been using cardboard for years to flow oil to a drop point and in a pan, it can be bent or molded and torn to any shape size works great. Crack the filter loose first not so loose it leaks but loose enough to finger it off, custom cardboard #1

if its the sky fan get rid of the fan cooler because it's not doing any good..(the new Jag Fan may be a better setup) and as DC Fireman say's,, use the oil filter box container folded out to control oil spill into the pan..  I've tried everything too and nothing beats the box container  :2vrolijk_21:
