Stumbling, stalling and popping...
« on: May 25, 2012, 08:17:11 AM »

I have an '06 FLHTCUSE that is stock to my knowledge. No Stage 1 intake or tuner/fuel manager. The only change that has been made is a couple different set of slip-ons I've been switching between trying to find a sound I like. The bike has just a bit over 17k and I've put about 800 of that on since purchase.

I first had the bike stall a couple weeks ago as I was about to leave the house in the morning. Rolled the throttle to go and died. Started right back up. No issue afterwards. Since then I've had two occasions where the bike stalled with the last time this morning. Started the bike and it was coming down off its high idle and died. I never touched the throttle. It stated right up again. At some point after the first stall I started noticing a stumble while riding but usually before reaching proper running temperature. I'd say within 5 minutes of the bike running. I've noticed a significant increase in deceleration popping. Basically, if I decelerate by down downshifting (my typical method) it's popping...I'm accustomed to some but this is just ridiculous. I have checked the exhaust for leaks and none were found. I always run 93 octane gas or the highest they've got.

Based on the behavior this seems like a fuel, timing or ignition problem. Looking to see if anyone has any insight before I take this thing to the dealer for a look-see.

Thanks in advance.

Look for a crack in your exhaust header...  Pull the heat shields, especially check the rear cylinder headpipe.  A crack could cause both your symptions or decel backfire and stalling while cold/low idle problems...this happened to me on an 04 SEEG years ago.

Of course, it could be other things, but if you're basically stock, it's a good place to start.   :2vrolijk_21:

sadunbar--

Thanks for the suggestion. I will look at this tonight. I notice the popping coming (to my ears) exclusively from the right muffler. So it could be either front or rear exhaust manifold but I'll check the rear first especially at the "Y" at the head connection.

Well after taking all the heat-shields off and looking for any leaks I was unable to find any. I opted to pull the older Screaming Eagle slip-ons (the illegal ones) off and put the '12 CVO slip-ons I had back on. The popping was less obvious but still there. Stumbling and poor running were still evident.

I pulled the trigger on a PC-V and a stage 1 intake from Fuel Moto last week. Got the parts and installed a couple nights ago.

All I can say is holy crap! The bike runs unbelievably now. The drive-ability issues have seemingly disappeared. I have real roll-on power now in 4th gear where before it would simply chug. This really seems to have allowed my 103 to wake up and run properly. It runs much cooler as well. I may get a set of Fullsac baffles for the CVO slip-ons I'm running as they're just too darn quiet. At some point I'll get the bike dyno'd and get it dialed in but for now the map pre-loaded by Fuel Moto is doing the job.

Has all this occured on one tank of fuel? If it has, I'd consider draining the tank and getting fresh gas. I've bought bad gas before from national stations.

Nope. Several tanks of gas.

I've had some bad gas in the past and that's not fun either....

Sorry, I thought this was a stumbling, stalling and pooping issue, since it's just "popping" I have no response.

 :D

"I thought this was a stumbling, stalling and pooping issue"--only when I've had more than I should.... :drink:
