Battery Charging Problem
« on: June 06, 2011, 08:21:44 PM »

I have a 2011 CVO Ultra and the Battery Tender Plus (12V, 1.25A). After a ride or just a cleaning it takes 10 hours for the light to turn green (Battery Charge Complete). Has anyone else experience this problem. My 2007 CVO ultra it only took 2 hours to turn green (Battery Charge Complete).

dbevins, I have 4 battery tenders. The ones on my 09SEUC, and my street legal Honda CRF 450X  will stop blinking in a very short time. I would say anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes or less. The one on my 95 Heritage will blink for at least 8 hours same as on my 04 vette. If I come out to the garage they are usually all solid green, but let's say I pull the connection even for a minute the battery tenders will start their cycle and blink again for hours. I checked the voltage and it is as high as 14.3 on the Heritage and it still blinks for a long time. I haven't tried this on the car. The honda sometimes will blink for only 5 minutes or less and then go to solid green. I think it is the individual batterry. I called the Battery Tender company and they said that their units are programmed to go thru that long cycle when disconnected even briefly. When I asked why my 09 SEUC and my Honda don't do such long blinking cycles the tech had no explanation. All I know is that when I check them before a ride they all show at least 13.9 volts. The tech told me they are programmed to shut off at 14.3. CAHDBIKER

CAHDBIKER, I did the same thing to test it. I just unhooked and reattached the Battery Tender and Boom it took around 10 hours for it to turn green again. My concern is this didn't happen on any of my previous Harley's (9 of them). I guess I'll have the Dealer check out the battery and/or charging system. I don't want to get straned on the road somewhere with a dead M/C.

Best guess is the circuitry in the tender. If the voltage on the battery is good then you are probably good to go. I had similar issues on my BMW and it caused me a little grief until I figured out it was the tender, not the battery.

I tried another battery tender I had on another vehicle and the same thing happen, so I don't think its the battery tender unless both are bad.

Make certain that there is NO resistance from the tender to the battery.  That harness that gets attached to the battery doesn't necessarily have the best ring terminals in the world, and there is a 7 amp fuse in it as well that can get corroded over time.  Then there are the connections to the actual tender harness.  Clean them and make sure they are tight.

The tender goes through at least 3 modes based on what it senses the battery condition is.  If there is any extra resistance in the circuit, it throws off the automatic sensing.  Not saying this is your problem, but it is one possibility that's easy to check and correct if not OK.

I must have had some dirty connections on the '08......the new Ruby, even after a two hour ride with the heated jacket cranked up and the tunes blasting....10-15 mins to fully charged.

dbevins, I have also switched tenders around from vehicle to vehicle and it doesn't make any difference. I am convinced it is the either the condition of the connections, or the battery itself that determines when that little light goes to solid green. Since my last post the original batttery in my 09 went out. Had a nice ride of about 80 miles with several stops, got home, turned it off in the driveway to open gate, jumped back on and it just clicked. All my lights were bright horn honked and the last time I checked it it was at 13.9 volts when I disconnected Battery Tender. I figured my starter went out, since when I hit the starter button it just clicked. Took it to Harley Dealer and they said under load it was only putting out about 7.5 volts. So they put in new battery. I got my bike in Aug 08 has had battery tender on it since new. I have now decided to get a new battery every 3 years even with tender. CAHDBIKER

FYI, the battery tender light on my CVO Ultra will go on for around 2-3 minutes when I connect after riding.  The battery tender on my Softails only flashes for maybe 30 seconds after riding.  SJ Ron

Well this is the exact situation I have been having since I bought my new Battery a month ago. Takes 7 to 8 hours for it to go green on Battery Tender after a short ride or even a long ride. I just bought a new light weight Red Battery for my wife's SG and it goes green within 20 Min's. I have had everything looked at and everything is working as advertised. At least now I have cranking amps to start BLUU and no more kick backs through the intake.

I have a very similar problem and have noticed that my volt gauge shows around 10.5 volts when I turn on my ignition, by if I check the battery with a volt meter it shows 13.9. Could there be a problem with something between the battery and the starter that is not making good contact?
