I purchased the 5 year extended plan with wheel and tire protection, hope i can hang on to this bike that long
cheers

It's paid for itself several times over, on my last three baggers.  But I don't take it to the dealership.....for extended warranty work I take it to Jim at Metal Dragon. :2vrolijk_21:

To expand on Midnight Rider's comments, the ESP isn't administered by H-D, it's an outside company that's endorsed by H-D.  And they are not subject to the Federal warranty laws, since the product is NOT a warranty.  So while H-D may or may not cover modified bikes depending on the whim of the day, the independent ESP company has been known to take a pretty hard stand on certain things.  For instance, trailer towing is verboten.  So are internal engine mods.  And I'm sure there are many other items in the fine print as well.  As is the case with any ESP product, you need to closely study the actual details in the contract to know what's covered and if it's worth anything to you in your particular circumstances.

Basically this product is like any other insurance product that relies on shared risk. Some folks make out, most do not. First and foremost, the price is determined by the historical costs of repairs, the sales costs (commissions to H-D and it's dealers), administrative costs, etc., plus a tidy profit.  So it is pretty obvious that the average buyer of the product does not recoup his investment.  If everyone who claims the ESP paid for itself several times over was the average customer, obviously the ESP company would go broke or they would have to raise their prices exponentially.  So you need to assess your actual risk and your tolerance for that risk.  If a couple thousand dollar repair bill would put you in a financial bind, but the additional X dollars a month on the bike note for the ESP wouldn't, then perhaps it makes sense to buy the coverage.  On the other hand, if you took all the money you'd save by declining the ESP and putting it in a rainy day fund you'd still have the money two years down the road when any repairs would not be covered by the factory warranty.  If you have a failure, the money is there.  If you don't have a failure, you have a couple grand set aside you can use for other things.  If you buy the ESP and don't have a failure, you are out the $1500-$2000 you spent on the plan (plus finance charges of course).

There is no right or wrong answer.  Everyone has different priorities and financial situations, and all I can suggest is that anyone considering an ESP should do some research before signing on the dotted line and handing over a pile of cash.  These folks aren't offering this product just because they like you and want to help you; they are in the business to make money.  As the old saying goes, there is no free lunch.

TOUCHÈ !!! No internal engine mods, eh? One more reason to cash mine in and put that money to better use...  :coolblue:

Well my factory warranty is up in 3 days.. I plan on purchasing the ESP tomorrow.. I typically turn down extended warranties because they are usually nothing more than cash flow for the seller. However, there is just too many things that can wrong with this bike and unfortunately I really don't trust it :nixweiss:

If you can't fix it your self it's worth the cost. I'm a salesman not a mechanic. What works for you might not work for someone else. That's why their is chocolate and vanilla.

I agree, but I am very mechanically inclined and i don't hesitate to work on/ fix anything; but I think the potential benefits definitely out weigh the cost of the ESP.... With the number of electronic systems and the cost of these systems, 1 claim would cover the cost plan.

JUST BUY A NEW BIKE EVERY TWO YRS

;D That might work, if you can get Harley to stand behind the warranty on a consistent basis.  Another approach would be to buy a more reliable brand and not have to constantly worry about it.

I got the 5yr extended plan. but since i have had to go into the motor to fix it right "voided warrenty", and they wouldn't do anything about the clear coat, and the noise from the compensator since 5k miles that is a "normal Noise". So the only thing that is left is the radio and if that goes Iron Cross will be getting that to fix. I canceled the extended. and when they asked why "I Told Them"  :soapbox:

Skipped their offer when I bought the bike on July 2. If it is giving me that much trouble in the next 2 years, I will not keep it. Simple as that. But I may change my mind towards the end of the factory warranty since the Ultra has so much in electronics that can be $$$ to fix.

Having said all that, I bought the 7 year ESP along with tire/wheel coverage.  I do all my own work on my bike and just keep good records to prove it.  The dealer only touches my bike when there is a warranty issue I feel is worthy of getting them involved in.  I look at it this way:  if I lost a wheel due to damage (not a wreck), or my radio took a crap, I've practically paid for the ESP right there.  If you lose a lifter on the engine, it will likely pay for itself there as well, IF the dealer doesn't give you any chit for "modification" of the engine by virtue of an exhaust change and a tune.  It's an insurance plan...you hope you'll never need it, but if you do, it might be worth it.  It gives me peace of mind, so I bought it.

Same here, just got a rear tire so I figure that was about 300-325.  My tires seem to attract nails and drywall screws.  No deductible on the tires either.  Got 20 % off the 5 yr plan at my selling dealer once I showed them a quote from Jenny.
