Hard Starting after sitting
« on: July 22, 2012, 02:39:21 PM »

Was not sure where to put this as it could be across all models.
I ride a 2010 Convertable
I have a hard starting problem and it resets my guages.

This started a couple few months ago.....I had a lot going on and the bike sat for a month; went to start it and it would barely turnover and even at 1st the solinoid was clicking like on a car. Bike fired but my low fuel lamp came on even though it had a full tank and reset the clock

So went riding that day no problems....then it sat for 3 weeks and same thing when I went to fire it. Went riding no problem start and stop several times

So then 2 weeks go by and before I even attempt to start it I hook up my battery charger and it says the battery was fully charged...hmmm ok.....put it back together go to start it and same damn thing...acts like the battery is low

So if it sits more than 5 days it does this everytime...............

Any ideas?

Yes and it is out of warranty

have the battery load tested first to assure its alright. Check and clean all battery connections, esp grounds to frame/ starter. If nothing improves have the starter solenoid inspected/ cleaned, its contacts can become burnt form use, and stop providing full power to the starter. FWIW twinotter

If the battery wont start the bike after four weeks it's probobly time for a new one. of course have the charging
system checked and  milliy amp draw test. Replace the battery in the smart alarm if more than two years old.

A bad voltage regulator can cause the battery to discharge after a few days.

You might want to do some research in the Softail Convertible Forum.  It is specific to our bikes.

If all the above fail you then try riding it every couple of days......don't let it sit so long!  :P

Security system will run the battery down if you have one. There is a way to set it for storage I believe check your manual

Same issue with mine, didn't load test cause it was 6 years old. Get a new Deka one for $100, it's the HD one without the $9o Harley sticker on it! Spend an extra $49 on a tender and you won't have any more issue!
