Simple GPS
« on: July 19, 2012, 12:28:25 AM »

I don't want to spend a wad of cash on a GPS... Just want something cheap, simple, and functional that I can use on the bikes and in my cars... Suggestions?

Thanks jimbob

Costco has a few good Garmins for reasonable price......not really skooter friendly though, but will get you by.

Got to make sure you get a solid state circuitry and not a hard drive, hard drive will not handle the vibration. It will shut off...

Most any of the Garmin Nuvi will do a good job.  But most of them are not meant for motorcycles, as they are not waterproof.  But, you can put a baggie over it.

Not sure any of the GPS units made in the last 3 - 4 years have a hard drive. They pretty much went away with the 2600 / 2800 series in Garmin when the much better NUVI was introduced.

For what its worth;
I called Garmin talked to a tech, and told him I don't have $600 for a Zumo what would he suggest.
He told me to check out the NUVI 550.  I bought it and use it in the car and on the bike works good, the battery wont last all day so when I riding long stretches without any road changes, I turn it off.
This was in 2007, it cost about $150, I bought a Ram handlebar mount off Ebay at about $50.  It still works good but I am sure there are new models to consider, mine has been rained on, all I did was turn it off.
Let us know what you decide on.

I have the Zumo220 and have been really happy with it's performance and it's a lot less expensive than the 660-665

I think you can still find a few of the old folding paper maps.  One of those and a back seat passenger who knows how to use it, can't get more economical than that. ;)  Otherwise, check the adds locally or on the 'net for one of the discontinued Garmin nuvi models.  I see them every weekend in the local newspaper advertised for as little as $99 including lifetime map updates.  Keep it dry, and come up with a secure mount for the bike, and you should be good to go.

That's what I did before my TomTom; but I can't read those tiny little mappy things anymore. The TomTom finally bit the dust which was good because it was a piece of crap anyway. Sooo many choices, sooo little time....
