A bit of a shock . . .
« on: July 30, 2012, 11:21:10 AM »

On a ride around Mt Hood this weekend, I decided it was a bit too warm for the full glove treatment and wore my fingerless gloves. Numerous times on the ride, my right thumb came in contact with the switch housing right next to the throttle and I  received a shock at the point of contact :o :o :o. The shock was not consistent in intensity, nor was it there all the time, but there were times that it gave me quite a little burn.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a fix? The bike is still under warrantee, but thought I would ask here before going in for a a lecture and a humility lesson from the local Service Manager.

Another electrical anomalie that occurred on the trip was my Oil Pressure Gauge. During a very hot and slow moving portion of the ride, the motor got extremely hot. Enough so that the "Parade mode" kicked in (forgot I had left it turned on). During this time the Oil Pressure Gauge showed 0 psi. The oil light never came on. After we got moving again and got up into cooler temperatures, the oil gauge returned to life and was fine for the rest of the day. Again, does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this?? :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

Thanks in advance!!

Just how many times did you allow yourself to be shocked?  Sounds like you have a grounding issue in that switch.  On the other hand (pun intended),  the definition of "insanity" is repetitive conduct expecting a different result.   :huepfenlol2:  Good luck with the fix.

Probably the switch(s), but there is a possibility that it could be the heated grip.  Pull the fuse out that controls the grips and see if you still get the shock.

Thanks Greg!! Yes I have been known for my padded cell moments! Actually, In order to use the Rt turn signal I tend to slide my have in toward the switch housing. (Short Thumb syndrome!)

I will do as Midnight Rider suggests and selectively pull fuses to try and isolate the prob.

I was hoping you'd get a laugh out of that!   :huepfenjump3:

BTW, your description of the oil pressure seems pretty normal for when the motor is hot.  At idle, you'll see little or no oil pressure registering on the gauge....  (I don't like that either...)

No problem on the puns and jabs . . . I like to give them myself, so I guess I better take em as well.

As for the oil pressure gauge . . . This along with a number of other items regarding this bike are starting to really make me lose my sense of humor. I really wish I could go back to the FXDWG that I "upgraded" from.

BTW . . .Thanks again for your input.

Sounds like you have a grounding issue in that switch.

Bad ground in the switch housing? Are you kidding me?

It’s obvious that someone hasn’t been reading their handy dandy manual...

Your bike has the special edition sadomasochistic feature, have a look in the goodie bag that the stealer provided to you on delivery, you’ll find a set of nipple clamps that plug directly into the accessory switch!
