Head set squeal
« on: October 01, 2012, 09:45:18 PM »

I have a 95' Ultra, I just bought 2 used helmets with intercom's one is a Harley helmet and headset... the other is a J&M headset.  when I plug the Harley headset in it squeals, if I plug the j & M in the back it does not squeal unless the speakers are on, or you push the ptt button.  this is my first Ultra and first time with any headsets and not starting out very well.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have headsets that are made for the 1999 and up Harley's. They will work on 1998 and below Harley's. If you have the older headset (1998 and below) they will work fine with a Honda or Yamaha.

So I guess that would mean the only solution is to buy two more headsets?

Yes and make sure they say they are made for Harley. The pre 1999 headsets do not say they are for Harley.

Ok, This may be a dumb question....But do the headsets themselves needs to be replaced with the cords? Or can I just replace the cords with the older model cords?
Thanks

The speakers in the headsets will work if they are wired correctly. The problem is with the microphone. The older microphone are condensive the newer microphone is electric. They are not interchangable.

Go to a Honda or Yamaha dealer. There bikes still use condensive microphones. Do not worry that there headsets are 5 pin. A 5 pin will fit into a 7 pin connector and will be wired correctly. Ask them if you can try them on your bike before buying so you can hear if you like the quality.
