HD Premium Shocks coming Off....
« on: August 03, 2012, 09:19:56 PM »

The Progrresive 940's and Monotubes will be waiting when I get home from camp in 10 days.... The Monotubes will have to wait till the bike gets parked for the winter, but the shocks - right away!, before my roadtrip.
I find the HD units to be jarring at best, even at the lowest setting and I way 210lbs. The experiment begins....

Hi Dak,
Keep us posted on this -
Been thinking of doing the Progressive Mono Tubes my self...

I have to agree with your comment on the rear suspension feel.  Although I mostly run them on the upper end and it is better for me.
I too am between 210 and 220 lbs.

Anyway -
Keep us updated of the progress please...

thanks,

SB

I have had thoughts about getting rid of the rear 'premium' shocks.....but on a 3 day trip with my daughter, all loaded up...cranked the shocks up.....a few hours and a bit of rough road later.....turned them up some more when they bottomed a time or two.....same thing two more times, then was all good. Now that I'm home and solo with no TP and they are turned all the way down, they ride much better than they did before being 'broken in' by having a good load on some rough roads.

Don't wait on the mono tubes, it is a 2 hour project, not a winter time project (although 2 hours could be winter here in Cali)

I had an almost new set of 940's I kept from my last bike. I rode the stock shocks for a couple thousand miles, put the 940's on and didn't like them. In my opinion they where much stiffer on the small stuff. My only complaint about the stock shocks is you can't make them stiff enough when loaded Down. I weigh about 225, with the wife, tour pak, loaded, we bottom out a little more than I would like.

My vote is, mono tubes and stock rear.

I am thinking about a set of 13" premiums for road trips.

I did my '03 with Monotubes, and with beer breaks a little more than 2 hrs  :drink:  I'm in camp 13 days and out 7.... When I'm out, nothing is gonna interfere with riding and having a good time!!! The neighbourhood kids are on retainer for the yard etc... So until the weather turns there will be no downtime.
The 940's will get a workout in 9 days, Hwy 20 loop thru the Cascades to Anacortes on the coast.... Full report to follow!

dak47, good luck with your pending improvements. Although I feel like it sucks that we have to spend a lot of money to upgrade suspension on a bike that costs so much in the first place. As for myself I have left the suspension stock on my 09 and it is not perfect, but it is acceptable to me. It seems to work the best with passenger and luggage, at about 45-50 lbs air pressure in rear. We did bottom out a couple of times on a recent trip to Arkansas, but overall I can't justify the expense to upgrade based on the way my bike runs. Keep us posted on your improvements. CAHDBIKER
