Help! Someone who knows about Zumo 660 and CVO
« on: September 22, 2012, 01:48:45 PM »

So i get all psyched up to drop almost a $1000 on a Zumo 660, mount and wiring harness for my 2011 SESG. I get to dealer. The P & A book states that you cannot integrate the Zumo with a 2011 CVO SG without buying a "speaker expansion kit" that includes saddlebag lid speakers at a cost of $999! First, I don't want saddlebag speakers and I'm not spending $999 in addition.  The parts mgr had no insight and told me he'll have to call the MoCo next week!

Can anyone shed some light here? I can't believe I'm the first to try this.  But I'm also not spending all that money not to have the gps work through the stereo system as it should. If that's the case, I can buy one for $150.

Thx!

Let's break this down into steps.

First: Mounting.  If you mount on your handlebars with a RAM or similar product you're fine here.  No obstacles.  If you would like to use the dash mount, there are some obstacles with your dash pad, but they are not insurmountable.  Folks have integrated the dash mount with their dash pad and have done most of the homework for you.  Just do some searching.  It's all posted on here somewhere and pretty well spelled out too.

Second: Power.  There is no reason that you can't mount your GPS via RAM and hook it up to a switched power supply (in the headlight loom or tapped to the lighter harness) and have your GPS running without audio in less than 30 minutes.  No issues here.

Third:  Audio.  If you are not seeking the use of the Navigation Interface Module (NIM), but do wish to have some audio for use by your stereo, you will simply need to run the 3.5mm plug from the GPS harness to the input on the front of your stereo.  I believe that cord is included in the zumo kit, but would recommend you confirm that for your self.  Nothing special here it and would only add a few minutes to your install time unless you get really creative in your routing.  There are other more elegant options you can choose here, such as adding an auxilliary (AUX) input to the rear of your stereo, or removing your stereo and shipping it somewhere to have it done.  That is not required.  As far as the NIM goes, that has been identified as a challenge to install on your particular model.  There are threads that explain how to do it in great detail, so I won't go any farther on that subject.

In summary, It sounds like you just want your GPS for basic operations, and maybe use the mp3.  Doing that will not be an issue.  No special installations.  It only gets slightly more complicated if you want to install a dash mount with your dash pad (like they have on the FLHTCUSE5.5 and later).  If you want to use the NIM, I would suggest you research a lot and consider the benefits versus the challenges.

BTW, if you get HD RT z660 from a 20% off dealer, it's only about $550 with shipping.

Lew,
All input is much appreciated. In fact I do want to use the NIM and have all the functions go thru sound system so that Bluetooth works with radio, lowers with a phone call, nav, etc.  Apparently the MoCo does make a harness to accomplish that but is only selling w saddlebag speaker kit, cwhichci have no need for.  The technology is there.  I just have to figure out a way to steal it! :bananarock:

What's the link to those other threads you refer to?

HD has a great looking chrome mount for the left side, it replaces the clutch clamp. The RAM mount works great, but is so butt ugly it just does not flow on a Harley, maybe a Jap or Euro but not  a HD. In the P&A catalog.

The NIM will not interupt the radio for a phone call, MP3, (XM, Traffic or Weather alerts if you get the 665). The NIM only works for turn prompts. To hear a phone call or any other output such as MP3 songs via the GPS you must use the Auxiliary Input on the radio. To talk on the cell phone you will need a helmet microphone  to GPS interface such as the HD Bomm, use this link (http://www.hdbomm.com/CVO.html). You must split the audio output that comes from the GPS so that it feeds both the NIM and the AUX input on the radio and the radio must be in the AUX mode.

Jim,
This is the frustrating part. On the floor of the dealer was a '12 SEEGUC which works exactly as I'd like my bike to work. It has the NIM and when directions or a phone call come out of gps, it lowers the radio volume just like when you come to a stop.  :bananarock:

As a fellow 2011 SESG owner, I went through the exact frustration that you are experiencing.  Long story short, I found an HD shop 180 miles from home that is set up to do the necessary wiring.  Am having the 660 and NIM installed via fairing mount.  My local dealer was reluctant to do the work and the one fifty miles away had no idea what I was talking about.

There are good posts on this site outlining the steps.  Do a search for Zumo 660 or 665 installation.  I have read them all.  The good news is that it can and has been done without the expensive wiring harness speaker kit.  there are certainly differences in customer service and technical abilities among dealers.

Did you actually see the radio volume reduce with a Phone Call?

I was looking at all the new models a few weeks ago to see if any changes have been made with the electronics and I did not see where a phone call was even heard as the factory does not wire the NIM for both NIM and AUX functions. If you do not see a jack plugged into the Auxiliary Input on the radio the bike is not wired to play MP3, a phone call, XM, Weather or Traffic Alerts from the GPS.

As far as I know the NIM has not changed ( I just installed a new one last week for a friend) and the installation instructions that came with it still says that if you want to use the GPS for phone calls or MP3, XM if you have the 665 model of GPS that you must follow the directions below which tells you how to connect the audio output from the GPS to both the NIM and the Auxiliary Input on the radio and that the radio must be in the AUX mode to hear these output signals.

You can make a phone call from the bike without the helmet microphone interface but you will be using the built in microphone on the face of the GPS to talk. This microphone is useless when you are moving, which is why the helmet microphone interface. You will not be able to hear the caller unless the audio output from the GPS is connected to the AUX Input and the radio is in the AUX mode.

If you did hear the radio reduced the volume when a phone call came in then the NIM on that new bike is bad because the NIM is not supposed to reduce the volume with any signal from the GPS but a turn prompt. The NIM is not supposed to activate the helmet microphone for any reason, if it does then the NIM is bad.

Do not expect the NIM to give you or even let you know when a phone call is present, it will not. If you want to know when a call comes in you must either see the call on the face of the GPS or put your phone on vibrate and put the phone where you will feel the vibration. Once you know and acknowledge the call and accept the call the radio must be in the AUX mode to hear the caller.

I guess I just want it set up correctly, whatever that may be? I want gps commands to come thru the audio, which from my understanding, uses the NIM. As for the phone, I have no desire to talk and ride - too dangerous.  However I'd like to see the caller ID so I know if I have to pull over for an important call.

Am expecting too much? I'm so confused now, I'm not sure how it's supposed to work?

LincUSA, could you PM me as to your understanding as to how this is supposed to work? Maybe I can find someone around here who can do the same...or a real good car audio installer.

Oh, btw, I am looking at the 660, not 665- don't need the XM.

And another thing, I'm still under the understanding that the P& A book says NIM not comparable w my bike - 2011 SESG? Seems absurd...

I have a 2011 SESG and have successfully integrated the Harely Version of the ZUMO into the stereo and NIM.   You need to purchase the NIM and a few connectors to make a Y-harness.  The instructions are below.  Good luck.
