My 08 has had the same thing happen 2 times in 25k.........both times the stator had failed.  Once the rotor failed caused the stator failure.  When brand new my motor sounded like the crankshaft was failing and after the first alternator was replaced the noise mysteriously disappeared.  The tech said the compensator bolt had broken and started to loosen.  HD apparently revised the bolt by making it much longer starting in 09 but that has raised alot of other issues.
