Blemishes under clearcoat front mudguard.
« on: November 03, 2012, 05:30:29 AM »

Hi there

I am the proud owner a CVO Street Glide and today I took it out for a fair ride covering about 250 k's (about 150 miles) and is is my habit after the bike cools off I start the process of removing splattered bugs and gently chamois off road dust etc. This is the first time I've detailed the bike. In the process of cleaning I found what I thought was bug guts on the middle to lower right hand side  of the front mudguard (below the fork mount and between the front edge of the guard and the flame graphics) 3 elongated spots about the size of the $ sign but rectangular in shape. Wiped them gently with a damp chamois but they were still there.

On closer inspection they are flaws in the metallic red paintwork (bike is Ruby Red) and definitely under the clearcoat. I could supply some photos if needed. To rectify it would require a fair bit of work I would think but I'm no spray painter. Or replace the entire front mudguard? From what I've been told only 6 Ruby Red FLHXSE3 made it to Australia.

Geez this is a CVO I thought. Shouldn't happen?

There are two scenarios here: do something about it by mentioning it to the dealer at the 1600 k service or forget about it and live with it.

Just wondering what other owners thoughts are.

Cheers  :-\

Sorry to hear you have a paint defect, I wouldn't wait for the service appointment, I would put the dealer on notice immediatly.  :-[

Contact the dealer ASAP and let him know the paint defects are not acceptable.  I have no knowledge of how they handle warranty claims Down Under, but I would imagine it isn't much different than how it's handled in the USA.  The fender might be replaced with a new painted part, or if they have an authorized paint repair facility for CVO's over there they may just repaint the affected area.  Either way, now that you know about the defect it will likely bother you until you do something about it.

Hi there
Thanks all for the feedback. I will contact the dealer asap. I've included a couple of shots of the blemishes which are definitely in or on the painted surface and underneath the clearcoat.
Does anyone have any experience on how this will be handled? Repair or replacement?

Cheers

Thanks for the pictures.   We too had a similar problem.  Looked like something under the clearcoat.   My hubby's 2012 BlkSlate  front fender, and my RubyRed/Maroon saddle bag.   Notified the dealer, they ordered new parts, put on; done.   We too get disheartened with the CVO "issues".   A lot of $$$ spent for 'the best'...   I've had major engine work done too! -- under warranty, and the dealership made it all right.
Good luck.  Safe travels.

If it were me, I'd report it directly to the MoCo in Milwaukee. Once they approve the repair, they'll ask what dealer you plan to have do the repair. They'll probably ask you to email pix of the problem.

Hi there

Would you still advise this seeing I live in Australia?

I had a similar problem with blemishes on my tank.  Took it to my dealer and HD replaced the tank under warranty.

Best thing would be to go to your dealer ASAP and report it.

Hi there
Yes, I agree but here's the "dilemma". I bought the SG privately from a bloke who bought two of these SG's in the same colour (Ruby Red). Yes, two of them, one to ride and the other to put on display in his rumpus room. Good luck to him!
He, decided to sell the one in the rumpus room with only 1 kilometre on the speedo and that's the one I bought. It was purchased from a dealer in NSW not from his dealership but from the holding warehouse in Melbourne and then pre-delivered by a dealer in Melbourne. Complicated?

I realise it's still under warranty and my feeling is to notify the dealer in NSW initially who sold the bike in the first instance and follow his direction?

Thoughts?

If you get on with your local dealer, they will look after you.
Regardless of the bike being purchased locally a decent dealer will take care of it for you.
IMO its worth talking to the local dealer, if that fails go directlly to HD Australia.
Its a factory fault and HD should take care of it.

Cheers
