Clearcoat flaking off
« on: May 07, 2007, 07:29:45 PM »

Has anybody had this problem? I ran through our famous Florida love bugs yesterday and when I cleaned them off last night my clearcoat started flaking off my lowers. I went over to the local dealer and of course this is usual according to the. I had a 04 Ultra that I sold when I bought this bike used and it had 25000 plus miles and no flaking. I called BS but they got defensive and said were only the messenger.  :soapbox:

This bike only has 9800 miles on it. I can't believe the clearcoat is falling off. My brother owns a body shop and told me they probably didn't bond the paint and clear correctly. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm thinking if it's past the warranty period, you're screwed as far as getting HD to fix it. (Sorry)  :-[

Defects in the paint are covered as I have a fairing and a right side lower bag being replaced.   Harley has an entire package that that has all the rules in it about paint and what is and what is not covered and even down to the size and number of feet away you have to be for it to be covered.   I had to go through this with my 07 and they brought out this whole pamphlet before I was able to go see the rep at Ormand during Bikeweek this year.

We have a good painter up here in my area Orlando that is pretty reasonable.   What I have had him do is sand down the pieces and then reclear coat my lowers and bags / fairing.   Ends up being slightly thicker than harley and helps with the love bugs so they don't eat through the clear coat quite so easily.

You might just suck up the 150 bucks its not worth the stress and just take the bag over to a painter you trust and have him reclear the bag for you.  Also stay away from pressure washing the bike it has a tendancy to help strip off the clear coat especially when it finds a ding where a stone may have already hit.

I've got a couple funky-looking spots in my lowers, too.  Pretty small areas and so far, not big or noticeable enough to mess with, but I've been keeping my eye on it.  If it gets a lot worse, I'll try the extended warranty first, and then when (notice I said "when," not "if") they deny it, do as Harry is saying and have a local painter work on it for me.

Haven't read it for a long time (since offered new actually).  But thought I remembered the extended service contract covering the various mechanical but not cosmetic failures.

I'll probabley do just that. Take it to someone and get it redone. They just pissed me off with the "it's caused by dirt and grime crap".
This dealer doesn't have the best rep anyway. They sell their bikes over msrp because according to them this is Naples.

OH Man...why do people do that?  Pay over MSRP that is.  That's exactly why he CAN charge over MSRP is because people continue to pay his prices.
I've NEVER had to pay over MSRP.  I've also never had to put any $ down.  I've had dealers try.  But I've made sure to tell them I'm going to shop around and I've always made the attempt to bring the bike I purchased from another place by and I've made sure to let them know what I paid for it and that as long as they continue to have the practice of screwing the customer that they wont have my business.
It's a shame that a few bad apples can spoil the rest.

Here is an update on the paint problem. I sent my lowers up to my brother to repair the clear. He sanded them down and when he went to blow them off the c;ear started flaking off again. He said that the paint was done wrong from the get go. They didn't apply the clear with it being sanded between coats.
He doesn't ride so he was amazed that this was supposed to be a custom paint bike.
