Cow bells
« on: December 11, 2012, 02:11:54 PM »

I think there called cow bells, the thing about in the middle of forks.

Is there a write up on how to install?

How difficult are they?

Depending on the bike, the beginning process will vary.

They are pretty easy though.

1.  Remove front brake calipers and secure to keep weight off the lower brake lines.
2.  Remove front wheel.
3.  Remove front fender.
4.  Remove fairing/nacelle as required (depending on specific model).
5.  Loosen pinch bolts in the lower triple tree.
6.  Remove the fork tube caps on the very top of the forks (I believe these are 1 3/8")

While you are removing the fork tube caps, the fork will start sliding out of the trees.  Be sure to hold each fork leg as you do this.

Keep each fork tube upright, as to not lose any fluid from the forks.

Now you can remove the cow bells by taking out the two bolts that are on top of them, into the lower tree clamp.

Like I said, it's tedious, but not overly difficult.

Never enough cowbell.... :D

BTW, I have a set of chrome ones that have never been mounted, still in the package.  They have the little bar and shield emblem as well.  If anyone is interested, shoot me a PM.

With the RG, it's not difficult....depending on the tools you have.

You need to remove the speedo/tach cover, and the side nacelles.  You may be able to get those off without removing the outer and inner, but that depends on your tools.

If you don't have a torx driver that is short enough, you'll probably need to pull the whole fairing.  The bolts that hold the nacelle to the fork are T40 in size.

On the roadglide, a standard torx bit with a long extension will work fine, with bike on a jack, turn handle bars full right then left and remove torx bolts from between tank and fairing from each side, have done it multiple times works great, also by turning the handlebars it makes it easy to remove the nacelle halves.

So this also sounds like the perfect time to upgrade the suspension???

Haha, carpe diem!

You sound a lot like me..."well, I'm already do this, and will have that apart, so I may as well do this too!"

Removing the slider covers only entails dropping the fork tubes from the trees - upgrading the suspension up front means disassembling the fork tubes themselves....

Either way, I like how you think!
