2008 FXSTSSE2 CVO Springer air filter options ?
« on: December 16, 2012, 08:48:03 PM »

My ( new to me ) bike , 2008 FXSTSSE2 CVO Springer still has the stock OEM Heavy breather with Rainsock.
It "looks" like a K&N type unit, and I know in the recent past "Screamin Eagle" kits came with a K&N filter.
Up until around 2006 maybe ?

Q1) Is this stock filter unit washable and re-usable like a K&N ?

Q2) Is it a dry or an oiled filter ?

Q3) What are the replacement options ? I have searched the K&N website with no luck.

I have had K&N filters on all my vehicles since the early 80's and have always been happy with the performance.
In this case I just want to relace the "stock"  Heavy Breather unit with a K&N or similar.

Any part numbers # folks could supply would be appreciated

The filter element that comes with the Heavy Breather air cleaner is a K&N filter, and it is an oiled filter.  Unless it's damaged, you don't need to replace it, just clean it and re-oil it.  The H-D part number for the replacement element kit (includes the clamp and a couple other parts) is 29424-05A.

Click on the attachment, which is the installation sheet for the HB kit, and go to the maintenance section.  It will explain how to clean and oil the element.  There is also a page with an exploded drawing of all the parts and the part numbers for replacement parts.

Thanks mate , info most appreciated. I've not had the chance to closely examine the filter off the bike as yet>

I already have the K&N cleaning / re-oiling stuff so that's all good to go !

That will be one of my first "jobs to do"
