My 03 SERK had 24K on it when i changed from the OEM to the updated Hydraulic Plate and tensioners. I have 16K on the new tensioners.
My 03 SERK still puts a smile on my face and it is "quiet". Zero intentions of "gered CAMS".
Then I am Pro Active with Maint. vs being ReActive.

In this NE 40 degree weather my 03 SERK loves it. My only stops are for more fuel.

I swear these Harleys are nothing but PITA moneypits ... the more I read about them the more pissed I get! Why can't you get a tighter chain and do away with tensioners all together? Look at all your old musclecars that used a double roller chain .... they didn't need tensioners since the chain wasn't sloppy and could go for many trouble-free miles. Why can't you do the same with a harley?

So now I have to rip my exhaust & cam chest cover off every 15k miles to check the tensioner shoes? You would be foolish not to replace them whether they need it or not if you're already in there. I think I need to go back to BMW and learn to like that new GTL instead of this high maintenance harley chit.

almost all cars with cam chains DO have tensioners. and many makes of cars do have issues with the things. many use belts to drive the cams - those fail too. quite a few other bike boards are filled with issues regarding chain tensioners, cam problems, clutch problems. years ago i had a gold wing that needed one new piston - the smallest part available was a complete rotating assy to get a piston. in the 70's there were always guys complaining about the cam drive on there pontiacs going south and bending valves. the plastic gears would go south, so then they put in steel aftermarket sprockets and the chains would go south. the only hot rods that dont have cam chain problems are the ones with small cams or zero miles. high mile cars got new cam chains on a regular basis. remember those old cars would be complete junk at 100k miles - trucks would do 100k and then die, but cars, 60k and overhaul... modern belt drive cams need new belts before 80k or they grenade the whole engine.
