Please help turn signals or brake lights won't work!
« on: February 26, 2013, 01:30:57 AM »

Ok so I just put back together my 08 ultra. Finished it up then fired it up for about 5-10 minutes then took it around the block and everything worked PERFECT then I take it out for 20 miles today and I have no turn signals or brake lights. Running lights work perfect though. My bars are internally wired so I took of the switch housings and although on wire was pinched it wasn't severed and that was only on the brake side. All wires were fine on the clutch side. I sprayed electrical connection fluid on the backs of the switches and also on the main plug and still nothing. Like I said everything besides the brake lights and turn signals work. I tested the rear plug where you plug in you wires before going into the rear fender and I'm only getting power for the running lights, also the turn signals don't even show up on the small gauge display.  I leave for Florida in 12 days so I'm really trying to figure this out soon. I don't think it would be a fuse because then more than just that would be out right? Maybe the switches are bad? Any ideas would greatly be appreciated. I'm going to take my old bars out there after I get some sleep and see if that will make the turn signals work. Will keep everyone updated. Thank you

Reading what you wrote above am I correct that you didn't check the fuses?  If that's so check them.  Just because you don't know what might have blown one doesn't mean it's not blown.  And check them all.  There's not always absolute logic behind the labels in a Harley fuse panel.

Simple and cheap stuff first.  Check the fuses.  For no other reason than if you find and fix a problem elsewhere you'd like it to work; and it won't if a fuse is blown.

Check the fuses and the bulbs.

Are your hazard lights working?

That same thing happened to me a couple of times after I washed my bike. Finally narrowed it down to the ignition switch not making contact.
Try to flip the ignition switch on and off several times rather rapidly. That did it for mine. Good luck!

I checked the fuse box today and sure enough I blew a fuse. When I put my chrome controls on I pinched the wire enough without knowing to bare some copper and it grounded out to the handlebars. Thank god it was just a fuse!

Congrats on getting the problem sorted.  Enjoy your trip.

I was commenting that I did not want to be a smart ass, but really I am trying hard to be one.......   sarcasm never translates well  in print.

"how about checking he fuses"...............DUH!   I was poking at the original post, not the problem solver

that may be a better context.

write this down....... check fuses when lights do not work.

OK I have done enough here

Gotcha :huepfenlol2:  :2vrolijk_21: .

Couple of thoughts:  Always disconnect the battery before working on electrical components.  When trouble shooting a problem, always check the simple things first ie. fuses, light bulbs, connections etc.  Items such as switches don't normally go bad in groups.  Pinched or rubbed bare wires at common problems on motorcycles since the begging of time.

Good luck and glad you found it.
