Overseas Bike Shipping / H.O.G. Discount?
« on: April 18, 2009, 12:40:15 AM »

Now that my orders to Hawaii got cancelled, it looks like I'm going to end up staying in Japan for at least the next couple years. So I've got to figure out how to get my bike over here. I'm flying back to Seattle 24 April to take delivery, so I am trying to come up with a plan quickly. There is a chance I might be able to still get the military to ship it for me, but I am looking into personaly procured options, in case that doesn't work. I've gotten 2 quotes so far:

Berklay (http://www.shipmybike.com/): expensive, but they truck it to NY and then fly it over, so shipping time is drastically reduced. But it is ~$3K
MoverQuest (http://www.moverquest.com/motorcycles/motorcycle_shipping.aspx): Trucked to LA and then put on a boat to Tokyo. Only ~$1,800

I asked for a quote from the link on the MoCo web page, but haven't heard back from them yet. I have also read on the HOG public page that one of the membership benefits is shipping discounts. But since I'm not a member yet, I can't access the page with specific details. Anyone use this avenue? Is it a significant discount? Any idea what company they use? Maybe someone could hook me up and access the page and see if they could request a quote for a SERG shipped from Seattle to Tokyo around 30 April?

I am getting SO stoked to get my bike. It is just gonna suck that I'll only get to ride it around Seattle for a few days, and then have to put it on a boat and wait for it again.  :(

Thanks in advance for any info y'all can throw my way!

Just when I thought I knew everything... lol

I learned something new today. I always knew when you separate/retire, you are authorized a shipment of HHG to your Home of Record (HOR). What I didn't know is, when you initially enter the service, you are authorized a shipment from your HOR... and if you've never used it, you can get stuff shipped from your HOR to your duty station!! I heard this from a guy here who had supposedly recently done this. So I went to TMO today and sure enough, that is true!! So I am going to be able to have my bike shipped on Uncle Sam's dime!!   :bananarock:

I not for sure but my Marine Son-N-Law was going to ship his bike to Japan. He claims what a pain in the a$$. You have to pass Japan Motorcycle standards on emmissions and braking and I think its very expensive to have the testing performed. Other on the site might know more info. He said bikes produced on or before 1999 were exempt.

Being new it won't be quite as bad... but yes, for some silly reason I'll have to have it emissions tested for 900 f-ing dollars. I guess that is the ONLY good thing about MoCo's decision to put a chokehold on the exhaust with the CAT, I shouldn't have a problem getting it passed.

Ding in my FXDSE2 battery cover...............$465.95....it would have been over $600.00
But I told the dealer I would remove the annv/serial number and stick on the emblem myself.
