Service ?
« on: September 13, 2006, 08:42:05 AM »

I am going to do my 5000 mile service and want to change the transmission fluid to something other than HD motor oil. I was thinking about Redline shock proof What weight should I use? Also what would be good to use in the primary other than HD primary fluid.

I have used Red Line Heavyweight Shookproof in the tranny and lightweight shookproof in the primary for the last 8 years in 2 Ultra Classics, with a total of 120,000 miles on two bikes.

Thanks for the info. I do agree it is nice to use the same oil in all components but 20/50w just seems a little thin to me for a transmission. I am going to try the redline. And going with Mobil 1 in the engine. You are right about the Harley mechs not wanting you to use anything but the syn3. I tried to get them to put HD trans and primary fluid in on the first service and I got them really upset to the point I said go ahead and use the Syn3, but I am doing it myself from now on and am going to use what I want.

I was running Amsoil 20w50 in all 3 holes and I put the Shock Proof Heavy in the trans last week. I really see no difference [smiley=nixweiss.gif]. I did see a big difference on the rk going from syn3 to Redline. I am also concerned how the Redline will be in cold weather?

BK-I ran the RL shockproof last winter down to 35 degrees with no shifting problems.  The shcokproof clings to the gears so well I believe you could drain it out and still ride.

I've used the heavy RedLine Shockproof and Amsoil Severe Gear 75-140.  Both work very well, much better than Syn3.  Primary gets Amsoil 20-50

2up, there is alot of links on this subject. I would recomend any good quality Synthetic oil. The top 3 on the site is Mobil, Amsoil and Redline. All good prices and better than syn3.

No kidding. I have a special funnel that I use for my tranny only. I'ts got so much pink chit built up in it, I don't want to change fluid types just cause it would be a real pita to clean it up.
