Heavy Breather Cap
« on: February 23, 2013, 03:43:38 PM »

Hi guys,

if you are planning to equip your heavy breather with a chrome cap, please note that the Breakout got a new model! The air cleaner is 1 cm longer than the old model = too long for the old cap.
I thought, don’t worry about is, change the whole heavy breather! Damned, the new model has a increase diameter!
My answer: remove the CVO-plastic-cap from the top of the filter, than the screws are long enough for the winding of the cap. But you have a cleft about 3-4 mm, that’s acceptable.

Thanks for the info.- I was considering getting this cover.  So, just to confirm- you took the chrome end cap off and then it fit?

Here is the link for the Screamin' Eagle® Heavy Breather Filter Cover - Teardrop:

http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448775324&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374309436464&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374309436464&locale=en_US&bmUID=1361727036802&bmLocale=en_US

Yes, it fit, but you have a little cleft, but this is not a problem.
In reality it looks much better than on the pictures! Must-have!

I always like the exposed element of the Heavy Breather, but Krise, you have changed my mind on that.  That cover looks fantastic and really works with the rest of the bike, IMO....Nice job.....!

I like the look of the cover, but at the same time don't want to get rid of the end cap that states CVO on it.

Hi Krise
Man I really liked the look of that, so I bought one for mine .
I found the same problem as you , but if you look really closely inside the CVO chrome cap on the end of the filter , it is just "glued" on the filter with a round piece of double sided tape about 30mm in diameter
I carefully lifted and prized the cap off ( not just the CVO medallion - the whole end cap) and bingo , standard length filter!! No Cleft !! :bananarock: :bananarock:
I actually creased my chrome CVO end cap a bit   ??? , but you could always just go and buy a replacement filter and keep the one with the cvo end cap .

Cheers
Dave

wild monkey is right! does not work for me at all.  i am not into sharp points on bikes.  I have a friend with a 2001 Softail Springer with a killer custom paint job.  On the shock towers and on the axle nuts, he has these type of sharp pointed spires....over the top for my tastes.

Dave,

Would you be able to use something like dental floss to "saw" through the tape without damaging the CVO medalion on the end?
---
I'm loving the Chrome Teardrop cover [28740-10], along with the Screamin' Eagle decorative medallion [29017-09] - but I don't want to buy a whole new filter if I can avoid it.

Hi Ieris
Mate that would work OK , but mine just lifted off easily with gentle lifting all way round bit by bit . .
The medallion is fine , but the real problem is getting the chrome cap off that the medallion is stuck on to .
You can't get floss or fishing line under it because it fits ' over ' the end of the filter like a cap .
I would suggest heating it with a hair dryer or similar to soften the glue and lift firmly from one side . But not hard enough to crease it like I did  :-\
