MAC tools Fork Cap tool
« on: March 09, 2013, 06:11:20 PM »

After trying to find a 35mm or 1 3/8 socket without success I decided to buy a MAC tools "Harley" fork cap tool.  It says 39mm tool for removal of fork caps 1 3/8 inch.  Anyone use the Tool from Mac or know why they say 39mm?

39MM is a little over 1.5"..   Have no answer.  I use a 1 3/8" box end wrench.  I can't remember what size large wrench comes in the tool kit with the bikes.   Someone will chime in who knows.  Good luck.

Thanks.  It has me a little nervous but what the heck, Mac should know what they are doing.

The forks are made by Showa (Japanese company with facilities also in the USA), so they do use metric dimensions.  I think what you will find is that the 39mm in the name of that tool refers to the 39mm Harley fork, not the actual size of the hex. 1-3/8" (35mm) is the correct size.  39mm and 41mm forks refers to the diameter of the tubes.

I've always used a 1 3/8" socket.

The actual cap sockets have rubber insulators inside though. O-rings. Help protect the top of the fork cap chrome.  There are some cheap ones to be found out there though. Check ebay.

For this project I also bought a ignition tool from Marc Parnes.  It works great and Marc is great to deal with.  I know I could have made my own or dicked around with a flat-heat screw driver but it sure is nice to have a quality tool built for the job.

I use this socket. With the cut down top there is enough room to get at the fork nut with only removing the lower fairing.
I use a drift pin in the ball retention hole.
