cut out my cat
« on: January 20, 2013, 08:16:33 PM »

I just cut out my cat on a 2012 street glide, plugged my o2 sensors back in and the bike seems to be running flawlessly. 75 miles so far with no trouble and throttle response seems to be the same as it was before. I have fulsac cores and was looking into a power commander or some type of remapping, does anyone know if I even need to do this. Just thinking about leaving well enough alone. Just looking for some imput.

I am new to the CVO world, but have been hanging around HD V-Twins for a long time.  I know for a fact that doing what you did increases airflow, therefore leans out your engine further.  I presume that with our newer engines already running lean and hot for emissions, things can get really toasty.  I have seen many instances of motors running hot, sometimes getting damaged. The only way you'll know for certain is to get an oil temperature gauge and compare numbers before and after.

From my experience, the results have always been the same.  Either rejet or reprogram.  For my money, because the results are always the same, I would go ahead and reprogram.

I recently did the Fulsac 2.25 cores, Sport Pipe, and TTS ECM download.  Only completed the job Friday and only a few hundred miles so far - but the results are remarkable.  Less heat, greater power and throttle response, and sounds really nice.  Not sure about MPG yet, but I anticipate the same.

all true

but

if the air cleaner is stock you "probably" are fine with no tuner. obviously not maximum hp - but the o2 sensors will bring the tune into general alignment.

if you change the air cleaner - then you definitely need a tuner. the engines ARE lean, very lean, but they are supposed to be and as long as you stay close enough to stock that the ecm can make the adjustment it will. go to far and its another story.

Long story short yes you need a tuner the 2012 sg comes with the ventilator air filter so de-catting and having free flowing mufflers you will be WAY to lean, get a tuner soon.

Comes stock with high flow air cleaner.  You added more air flow removing the cat.

Stock the bike runs way to lean, and way to hot.

You just made the bike run even leaner.

Get a tuner and have the bike tuned, or get a tuner and load a canned map.

I took my "cat" out on my 2012 SESG and put Freedom Performance 4" slipons on. Runs way cooler and I haven't experienced any big difference other than it runs way cooler than it did before.

I think the ECM can "adjust" for MINOR upgrades like changing the mufflers. But removing the cat is NOT a minor change, and adding that to changing the muffler cores will result in a very lean condition.
Just my opinion but if you don't get a good tuning device and accurate tune done i'm afraid you may be looking at some expensive repairs like replacing pistons and cylinders due to the excessively lean running condition. The bike might seem to be running fine but it will run correctly with a quality tune ....

A tuner will be a good investment for any future mods you do , play safe and get it now !

I would recommend the TTS  and I would suggest you get one from Steve at Fulsac , since you have the fulsac cores , he would probably have a map to suit .

Send him an email !

Just to raise the issue again, the cat isn't so much of an air flow restriction as it is a heat generator as the catalyst burns off excess fuel.

With that in mind, would removing the cat while keeping the stk exhaust reduce heat but not lean out the mixture?

The o2 sensor should adjust for slight changes and going with a more open exhaust would require a tuner. Has anyone had experience with removing the cat only?  :nixweiss:

I am only interested in heat reduction.

If it was my bike I would get a tuner and at the least run a canned map.
Idealy do a few data runs or get a dyno tune.

With only a few miles on, I think that I will probably run it stock this season but just thinking of a few options if it seems too hot.

I am a bit hesitant on some of the canned download maps.  I have seen some that are good in some ranges and not in others.  I will probably go with a full dyno tune if I pony up for a tuner.

Thanks!

You are correct in your line of thinking.
IF your ONLY change is getting rid of the cat then you will be fine (still lean, though).
Best bang for the $$ IMHO is the Fullsac stage 1 setup......you may NEVER want to change if from there!

I have the same bike, and last year I did the same thing. Everything was fine. Bike ran great. Then I rode to Sturgis, and my motor was pinging, and and over heating trying to climb hills. I stopped and picked up the Power Vision and it made all the difference. Power was dramatically improved. And when I got back to Indiana the bike runs noticeably cooler.

If you don't you will hear it ping and that is damage.

Kick it old school, make a run get up to operating tempature come back take the plugs out and read the color. The plugs alone can tell you a lot. I say it will be very lean and you better get some fuel in there before you toast something important. I don't mean white toast like The Blues Brothers either. Power Commander V will also work great as well as the TTS.
