I had my local HD Shop do the Hydraulic cam chain tensioner conversion on my 2001 Screamin Eagle Roadglide which has SE257 cams. Something has continued to go wrong after the install. The Hi-Flow Oil pump has broken three times, each time after only 1,000-3,000 miles of easy riding. After the second time it broke they replaced the entire crank shaft, flywheel, and rods assembly, but it broke again.  It has also been experiencing a pinging (detonation) at light throttle under load at RPMs under 3,000. If anyone has experienced any of these same issues or may give some insight into what may be going on, email me please ... danmcclane318 (at) hotmail.com

Has the same person done the installation each time?  Short of improper assembly, I can't imagine why an oil pump would "break" 3 times, especially after installation of new crank assembly.   :nixweiss:

Is the proper crank case bearing installed?

Would installing a Baisley spring to boost the idle oil pressure help?
Or do you think if they are trying to use the wrong cam chain may be causing some of these problems. Since the bike has the Magneti Marelli efi.

Some have suggested that if having converted to the hydraulic tensioners on an older bike that you do not want to use an alternative pressure spring like the Baisley part.  The suggestion has been that "more" oil pressure is not what the hydraulic tensioners were designed to handle and this might cause premature wear and failure.

As for using the wrong chain I'm not sure, but I don't think you can and still have the bike run.  It is the case that a Marelli EFI bike will not use the chains that come in the tensioner conversion kit.  They won't trigger the cam position sensor correctly.  The wrong chains for your application could be bolted inside the engine.  I've never actually made that mistake but I don't think the bike would even run if it were put together this way.

There are a few differences (subtle or less so) on the early engines for this kit.  The entire instruction sheet for your review can be found here:

The specific section (from page 5) detailing using the original chains for your application is illustrated here:
