103" Motor Trouble
« on: September 08, 2006, 10:58:46 PM »

Well, Last night I went out with some friends riding and as I pulled in from about a 25 mile leg of the trip, the motor developed problems. As I pulled in the engine seemed to be running as normal, but I noticed that it was smoking a lot and smelled like oil.  :'( I parked the bike and let it cool down, when I tried to restart, it would not start. I did finally get it to restart, but it was popping and sputtering and would not stay running. I trailered it to the dealer today, but they have not looked at it yet. They thought it sounded like maybe valve guide seals had gone bad allowing oil in the top of the cylinders and fouling the plugs. Anybody ever heard of this? or can offer me some insight?  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] If it is to major, I am just going to call it quits for this riding season and start doing the engine and transmission work that I planned on doing over the winter early. I was planning on doing a zippers 113" this winter anyway and I have a Baker six speed ready to go in as well.  :)

Apparently I made somebody mad  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] or they had my bike confused with somebody elses!  >:( The problem with the bike turned out to be diesel or some kind of other oily substance in the gas tank! I had not filled up for a while, so I know it was not me. I had the bike parked outside a local watering hole  [smiley=drink.gif] and have the push button fuel lid, so anybody could have gotten in to it. I just wish I would have caught whoever it was!

Well....on the one hand I'm really happy for you that it is not engine problems!!  On the other hand, what low down sumbitch would do something like that to your scooter, bro?  It's hard to believe there would be somebody that f'ing sorry, but I guess there is.

Low down piece of chit for a human being!! [smiley=soapbox.gif] [smiley=soapbox.gif]

Didn't catch them in the act and likely no one will remember having seen anything this much after.  So screw it, there are better things to worry about than dumasses and assholes.  No long term damage.  flush it, ride it, be happy.

By the way, are you sure they were specifically messing with your bike?  Any word from other patrons on the lot that night of other trouble?  Might have been some generalized pain in the ass rather than a specific one?

not that i have the energy for such chit...but the chrome tank filler cover makes for an awesome surface for prints! [smiley=shocked2.gif]

Have noticed that before.  Even wondered about it here.  But sometimes it's just easier to ride on  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] .  At least it seems like it.

If it happened a second time though, I'd reserve the right to reevaluate any sense of tolerance.

I learned long ago that you dont cry over spilled milk. It is getting flushed out fuel tank, all fluids are getting changed twice and she will be ready to roll! Maybe if my hawg-wired system gets here monday I will get it installed while it is still there. This definately won't stop the planned 113", but at least I don't have to call my riding season short to do it, and can leave it as planned for a winter project.  8-)  ;)

Brian,
The Baker is coming from Walters Bros., they took a bike on trade with a low mile Baker in it. (couple thousand miles) Bill Wiebler took it out of the bike and made me a really good deal on it, it is just waiting for winter also. This sight has cost me lots of money!!! Zippers 113 - gotta have it / Baker 6 speed - gotta have it / Hawg Wired - gotta have it / Ride Str8 - gotta have it,..........................I hope Im running out of gotta have its, cause Im running out of expendable money for the year!  ::)

Brian, Long story short, They agreed to do the stereo because they messed up on some other stuff! They usually wont do parts not bought there. I was originally going to do the harley upgraded stereo/external amp. I was not really happy with this but since that is all they would install and my lack of patience for such projects, that is what I was going to do. They were supposed to have ordered the parts to do this a couple months ago, and when I brought it in to get it done about a week ago, they got it all torn down and the removeable tour pack was changed to fixed mount. I called them the next day to make sure it was done before I went to pick it up. They advised me they were still waiting on parts, namely the amp. I advised them that I was lead to believe that the amp had come in over a month ago, so when I talked to parts dept, they advised me that the amp had only been ordered the day before.....needless to say, I was not happy. Tony (head of parts dept) was not there that day, and is also who I ordered the parts from a couple months earlier. The next day I get a call from Tony telling me that Harley has since discontinued the two channel amp and only has the four channel, which would require me going to a king tour pack with rear speakers, which I didn't want since I just paid for the chopped tour pack! So, Bill agreed to install the stereo to keep me happy over all the other mess ups with the parts. I don't think it probably hurts either that when they have events out there and need security, that me and a couple of my buddies volunteer our time, instead of the normal 30 + dollars an hour that we normally charge for off duty security jobs!

I am also going to do my zippers 113" through them for this reason. It stinks that they will not do any installs of any parts not bought there, but I understand why they do it, cause you can always find parts cheaper online and the online store usually doesn't have the overhead that they do for a wood and brick business. That is the other thing, I asked Tony to check into getting the hawg wired products through them even though it was going to cost me more, so I could have them install, but he was "to busy" that day. I like their service dept, wish I could say the same about parts dept. They have taken pretty good care of me, but I bought my last CVO there, plus about 18000 worth of repair and service work to this bike (including the wreck). I have been a good customer for them. I forsee another $7000 worth of work this winter by the time I get my 113" and Baker done, plus any other small odds and ends. I would ask that you not say to much to them or I will end up not getting my parts done either. That is why I still have my ride str9 still sitting at home uninstalled, cause I knew better than to even ask....already knew the answer NO! Bythe way, where are you getting your parts installed or have you already? and if so, where was it done?

Brad, thanks for the explanation!  I appreciate it!  Don't worry, I'm not gonna say a thing to them!  I'm just happy for you that they've agreed to do what they're going to do for you . . . . . it definitely sounds like they owe you one after all the other hassles!

I have been totally pleased with them up to this point, but I'm not real happy about the way this deal went down with me and my parts.  If I tally it up, I've spent more than $50,000 out there and they have treated me well, but they gave me the line about not installing parts that you don't get from them on this Zipper's gear drive cam conversion.  I had all the parts sitting at home and they actually told me that if I'd return them and then re-order everything through them, they'd do it, LOL!  Yeah right!  Said, "Just let us know!"  I was thinking, what do you want me to let you know . . . . . . how well the bike runs after SOMEONE ELSE does this work for me?!?!

Thanks to JR's tremendous efforts, Bumpus H-D in Memphis, TN is doing the work for me here in a couple weeks.  Don't mind the time or the gas it's going to cost to trailer the bike down there . . . . . they are happy to do the work for me, using all the parts I already have and knowing that I've only spent about $50 in their store before now, not $50,000!  Plus, they are going to get the 15,000 mile service business on the bike at the same time since it will be due for that . . . . even more business and revenue for their[/i] service department!

I only plan to use the local shop here for future routine services (20,000 mile, 25,000 mile, etc.).  Too bad, since I like their service, too, but this situation has left a bad taste in my mouth with them.  All my future mod. work (and there will be more!) will be going to someone who is not greedy!

I hear you, I know a lot of my buddies who have gone elsewhere (Bloomington, Princeton, Galesburg) just because of situations just like this with W B Harley. Even our department goes to Chicago to get their bikes because W B won't deal with them on the price. They need to realize they are not the only game in the area!

There is apparently a letter to the dealers pertaining to the valve guide seals not sealing properly and it is not an uncommon occurence!
I have been using about 1 qt of oil every 1100-1200 miles and when I brought it to the dealer's attention, he told me about the letter/notice.
So mine is going to be serviced to correct the problem.

I wonder why HD Inc doesn't have recall letters out to owners?
It would have saved me a lot of Amzoil!
