Warranty?i
« on: March 28, 2013, 04:09:31 PM »

I have the extended warranty service plan and VIP maintenance with my HHD.

However, I am looking forward to meeting Steve @ Fullsac in about 3 weeks, going for it with the Andrews 54h cams, Torrington inner bearings, bearing chest kit, Fullsac  DX pipe,  Fullsac CVO powercores 2.25" baffles, mod with my V&H HO, Woods lifters, Cometic .030 gaskets, TTS Mastertune, & Dynotune whether, I think I remembered everything...

Question: are they going to give me sh@k$t at the dealership on changing this stuff?i can't imagine they would, but you guys (and gals) have a lot more experiences with the stealership than I do.

I am looking forward to this only mod for me, aside from freeway pegs when I take off the passenger pegs. I might also take off the 2 point rack system since I will not likely ever get a storage rack  or anything. Scarlett is strictly for the solo rides.

My first & last CVO, Scarlett, arrived 6-1-12. I always remember my mom while riding.  She had smarts with a spirit of independence & adventure. "You Gotta LIVE!", was her motto; her favorite color red, and she loved BLING.

Whether or not you get coverage can depend on your local dealer. My dealer says as long as they supply the parts and do the labor they will cover. They do admit that mods may not be covered if I an traveling and get service at another dealership. If on the road and possible I would have my bike towed back to dealer for repairs.

The Magnusson - Moss Warranty Act protects the consumer some in that it states that a modification has to have a direct effect on the problem to void a warranty. Ex. if you changed a headlight but your brakes fail it should be covered. Grey area gets into things like motor/ exhaust mods affecting other parts of the drivetrain.
Best thing to do is to ask your dealer directly. Otherwise you may be smarter to cash in your warranties and get money back and put in a savings account to cover future work yourself.

you might get coverage - the electrical system like the radio will still be covered - but likely as not they will not fix any engine problems - and might not fix any transmission problems once you change much of anything in the power train.

everything that is not street legal and epay approved theoretically voids the powertrain warranty - your milage may vary

like the other poster said - you should probably cash in your esp - the esp is not a warranty at all its a service contract - you pay them money and sign a agreement that you wont change anything on the bike at all and they will fix anything that breaks during the period - you have vastly less recourse with the esp if they decided not to warrant.

First, the ESP is not a warranty.  I'll keep harping on that as long as folks persist in calling it (incorrectly) a warranty.  Second, Magnuson-Moss does not cover ESP's, it only covers original factory warranties.  The ESP company can void the coverage for any of the exceptions noted in the service contract, and they often do.  Third, the dealer can verbally promise to honor the factory warranty or the ESP even though the failure isn't really covered, but the promise is unenforceable. Sure, he can submit a fraudulent claim, but he doesn't get the last word on it.  Harley (factory warranty) or the ESP company has the final say, and they don't give a hoot what the guy in the dealership promised you.  Unless that dealer is going to guarantee in writing that he will cover the cost of repairs if Harley or the ESP deny the claim, his promise is useless.

Read the entire ESP contract (get a good magnifying glass) and make note of all the requirements and the loopholes.  For instance, you will find they can void the coverage for general things like nonstandard parts, or certain specific activities like trailer towing.  Does that mean that no one ever gets away with having something covered that really shouldn't have been?  Absolutely not.  Harley or the ESP folks don't inspect every bike that goes to a dealer for repair, so some claims for things that shouldn't be covered do get paid.  The entire thing is a crap shoot, just like going to your friendly casino.  So just because several guys will chime in here and tell you they got their heavily modified bike covered, that isn't any kind of guarantee you wouldn't have the opposite experience.  You pays your money and you takes your chances just like anyone else.

I'm in the camp where I would cash out the ESP, it will be prorated but at least you'll get something out of it. How many years left on the ESP?

Can you cash out the remaining years of the ESP after they've paid for covered repairs?

I looked into this years ago with an ESP on a car and was told you could only cash out if you had never used it.  Not sure if the HD ESP is the same.

You are 100% correct. I really boils down to the service manager/dealer
