Clutch Hub
« on: April 15, 2013, 07:20:15 PM »

Thought my bike was having issues starting when it was hot...and S&S easy cams would solve the problem.

Pulled the starter apart today and replaced the clutch in it just in case that was where the noise came from.. but still couldn't figure out why those little hunks of metal were in my primary oil.

So today I pulled the clutch basket off... looks like I need a new hub!

My bike is an 06 with just under 50k on it.

Flip it over, the the snap ring pop out too? $140

Although this is the least of my issue right now, I just pulled the heads and cylinders, may have found out why my dipstick blows out sometimes

I went through two hubs before the Barnet. Seems like a pretty weak link in the drive train

Looks exactely like one of my damaged ones when I hit 40,000 miles.  The other had the post chewed up from an improper installation from the dealer.  Like porthole I had to rebuild the entire primary.  I'm convinced if you ride hard you will become very familiar with the components in the primary.  Good Luck

Since this was discussed on another post by porthole maybe it would be a good idea to check the stator area.  I have located quite a bit of metal in the magnetic cover, when my hub looked like that.  if you don't need to replace the compensator their may be metal located in there which may cause damage to your stator.  But in all honesty I'm not 100% positive, maybe someone more knowledgable will chime in.

Any time you have a lot of metal debris floating around I think it would be very wise to pull the entire primary apart and inspect everything.  It would be a shame to replace the one obviously bad part and put everything back together, only to have some remaining debris cause another failure that requires pulling everything apart again.  In other words, check the compensator, the inner primary bearing, the tensioner, the chain, the whole nine yards.

That's exactly what I did... since it's open just pull it all apart.
