Hard to reach kickstand
« on: April 14, 2011, 07:06:43 AM »

Im looking at getting my wife the red or brown convertible but she is a little on the short side about 5'3". The bike fits her well but she has a problem reaching the kick stand the raise it up. I thought af replacing the floor boards thinking that might help her to reach the stand. Has anyone here had this problem?  My dealer has the red one in stock but we have been trying to find a brown one. I hope to get her the bike one day yet this month for her birthday so any ideas would be great.
Thanks

Thats a pretty awesome birthday present, must be a special gal.

Actually the kickstand is a touch of a pain to reach but not that bad. You probably could find an aftermarket stand if she really doesn't like it. I wouldn't forgo buying this bike over that though, this is a great bike. And as you can see I'm partial to the brown (Maple) one. :apple:

She is pretty special and after all the toys she lets me have this is the least I can get for her. This is the first new bike that she felt comfortable on. I really like the brown but we haven't had much luck finding one yet. My dealer has Red and blue right now but Ive been holding off on brown but may have to get red one. When we were at Daytona this year she rode the CVO and loved it but could not reach the kick stand to retract it.

Hold out for the "maple" one ... red and blues are common colors ... when getting something as special as a CVO...get the one you really want ... A local bike shop, (Not Harley) will weld an "extension" on to the kick stand "upright peg" and such will allow a short leg person to reach up and pull the kick stand back when extended ...I will try to take a photo of this mod and post it ...but I think you can understand the concept ... not a big problem to weld a piece that extends rearward and then have it "re-chromed" ...or just pollish the weld ... looks fine ...

regards, ben

Howdy From Colorado...  I like all three colors now that I have seen each one in sun light... but the maple/roman gold I like best... I have to reach for the jiffy stand myself but have gotten accustomed to it now and can catch with the tip of my boot with no trouble...  I did lube the dang thing up good though.. it was stiff as heck new.

Well my dealer got me the Maple colored bike yesterday and today is her birthday so she was a very happy new CVO owner. Soon as the V&H pro pipe, tuner, and new kickstand gets installed we'll bring it home. Hopefully it will quit raining and start to get warm by then or she will have my out riding in the cold weather. HaHa.  Ill post pics of the kickstand when I can.

That may work for the CVO, but it won't work for my wife's Softail Deluxe...that part says original equipment on Softail Deluxe....

I have the 2010 CVO convertible and am 5' 1/2" tall. Even with the seat shaved I could not reach the kickstand.  So, I had a welder who builds motorcycles modify the stock kickstand. The extension makes it easier for me to locate the tab when up to pull it down.  It does not interfere with the geometry of the bike.  I can now reach it comfortably when down to pull it up without fear of dropping the bike especially after flipping up the floorboards.  The 2011 CVO's floorboards do not flip up so you may wish to change those out.  If you live in Colorado I can give you the welder's contact information.  He did a beautiful job. Otherwise, try to find a reputable welder who builds motorcycles to modify the kickstand.

As for trying to find a new kickstand on the internet - forget it.  I did an extensive search and it does not exist.

I took my wife to the dealers shop Friday and after getting the floor board to flip up it helped alot with her reaching it, but when I get the bike home next week I will weld a piece of polished Stainless to the bottom back side of the kick stand. Ill post some pics of it when done plus I will cut the piece out on my burntable so if it works and looks good I can provide the parts for anyone who would like them.

I have the same ride and considering the V&H Pro pipe exhaust.  Would you mind posting a few pics?

I know this is an old thread, but I was also struggling to reach the jiffy stand and searched the forum for a solution. I ended up bolting the HD jiffy stand extension (part 50000008) to my bike. Product description says that it won't fit any of the convertibles, but mine is working just fine. If the floorboards were a 1/4 - 1/2 inch wider- I probably would have had a problem.
With the extension, I still have to reach a little for the peg (I am 5' 4" on a tall day), but I'm not blindly and unsuccessfully reaching like I was before. This little mod is good to go, IMHO.
