Grind Rocker?
« on: May 13, 2013, 09:33:52 AM »

my mechanic has the heads offs and he called me to say someone previously grinded the rockers.  I bought the bike used (2008 SERK) with about 2,800miles.  It had the stock cam (255 cam) so not sure why someone would have grinded the rockers.  Anyone have any thoughts on why this might have been done?

Maybe because the valves look like this and someone was trying to save money?

Are you sure he said they ground the actual rocker arms, or perhaps they ground the rocker box.  That was necessary on early 110's to keep the valve spring retainers from rubbing the box.  It was a known problem that Harley finally acknowledged in a bulletin.

If someone really did grind the rocker arms, I can't imagine why they would do that.  I don't think new rocker arms are all that expensive, so unless they knew they were planning to sell it and just wanted a cheap fix to get rid of the bike, I can't think of a valid reason to grind one.

I had to grind the bolts on the rocker covers when I change the rubber motor mount, the velva is a little larger than stock... could that be what he meant?

GRC, maybe it was the rocker box.  It was a quick conversation.  Anyone know where I can find the bulletin that GRC referred to in his post

Can't find the one where they originally told dealers to grind the stock rocker box, but I've attached the page from a tech tip where they announced the change they made in production to provide more clearance.

Thanks GRC.  I just sent off a note to mechanic to see if this what he was talking about.  I bought the bike used with about 2,500 miles from a dealer in Maryland.  Must have been done by the dealer if the original owner complained of top end noise.  I had some top end noise until I changed out the lifters to S&S with adjustable pushrods.
