New exhaust set up
« on: April 16, 2013, 02:26:47 PM »

Guys, would like some advice.  I have V&H power duals with Fullsac 2" cores on the standard HD mufflers on my 2011 SESG (and SERT tune).  I originally had Hi Output slip ons but had to remove them due to being caught a few times by the boys in blue for too loud an exhaust system.  My problem is that my exhaust sounds really quite "tinny" and is nowhere near the deep power rumble I am looking for (without being over the top loud).  Any suggestions?  I am also not that convinced the O2 sensor on the power duals is actually doing the job?  Cheers

For a throaty sound i personally like the D&D's 2 in to 1 and they sell a ghost pipe if you want the look of Duals.  For the 110 engine there is a medium sound baffle and a loud baffle.  I had the loud on a previous bike and damn they sound awesome, but if you plan on touring and want to listen to music maybe go with the medium baffle.

Did you leave the packing in with the fullsac cores. If not, that can cause the tinny sound. I replaced half the original wrap and got the deep sound you may be looking for...

That would be my guess also.  The packing in the muffler cans is there for a couple reasons, one is to insulate the cans so the chrome doesn't turn blue and the other is to "tune" the sound output.  Removing the packing will tend to make the sound more harsh and metallic in my experience.

I had V/H True Dresser Duals and after many attempts at trying to tune the bike correctly, we discovered that the bung for the rear pipe was not placed in the pipe correctly therefore not getting a good read.  They sounded great though!  I took them off and sold them and put on a Drago's 2 into 1.  It sounds almost as good and the bike runs a lot better.

Guys, I left all the packing in the exhaust, still sounds chit!  I was thinking of Freedom performance racing slip ons as a mate of mine has them and they give a deep rumble or V&H twin slash monster slip ons?

Outlaw,

I had Vance & Hines Dresser Duals and Rinehart 4" Mufflers and loved the sound! I sold the setup last week and today will be putting a set of Dragos Drgula 2 into 1 on my bike with 2.55 baffles. Not sure if it will sound as good but i am sure it will out perform my old setup!

On my 08 I had Vance & Hines dresser duals   and CFR mufflers. In my oppinion the CFR slip ons are the best sounding pipe on the market and the quality of the pipe is second to none. They have a very deep rumble are not overly load until you jump on it then watch out. I would have had these on my 12 cvo if all my friends hadnet ran out and bought them once they herd mine.

Drago's are very hard to get right now because of the demand. If your looking for a set they are on back order 6-8 weeks. I got lucky and found a set at RT. 66 Harley. They had one set left in stock.

I personally love the Freedom Classic 4''Slip-ons....very deep rich tone and only 88 decibles.....plus they perform well

May as well chime in here since I am very happy with my final choice for mufflers.  I had the Fullsac 2.25 cores with the X-Pipe, I sold the stock mufflers with the 2.25 cores and bolted on a set of Kerker Stouts (not Supertrapp Stouts) the sound is incredible and according to the write ups the performance is supposedly very good.  I found local TTS dealer that did some work for me in 2008 so I plan on brining my bike to get a map made.  I will post a sound clip, but Yaffe has a real good one on You Tube and its a true sound.

Doc,

On the drum, Is there much loss/gain with a true dual vs. power dual style headpipe on a stock 110?

The Power Duals make good power, the only problem I have with them is the rear 02 sensor is way out of place and this effects a the way the bike runs....it can and will pull the tune out up to 18%. If you have a 2009 and earlier power dual there is no problem.
True duals got a bad rap in the earlier days when Rinehart was the one everyone went with.....we did see a lower rpm power loss however it wasn't from the pipes....it was from the 2.5 and 2.25 muffler baffles. Lack of back pressure drops tq and hp in the 2000 to 2500 rpm area. Now link this up with a cam that doesn't work well at that range also and you have a slug on your hands.
True duals like Rush headers linked with a 2'' baffle and you won't see that drop in tq/hp like the old days.

Hey Doc,

What do you think about the Freedom Performance " American Outlaw" dual system? Have you ever tried to tune this combo? I know what you've said about tuning the CFR's. I like the sound and look of a mega phone styled pipe but would like to have a good tune also. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Doc,

Do you know any tuners in Michigan that have the software for TTS?  I found a place in Plymouth Michigan J&R Performance Cycle that did some engine work for me back in 2008, push rods were out of adjustment, o-rings laying loose, and the oil filter didn't seat right which caused a small leak along with a gash in my fairing.  They stood up and made it right, but I'm a little uneasy, anyone can have a bad day but......they are now a TTS Mastertune dealer and it appears its either them or ? if I want my bike tuned.
