Locking Latch
« on: April 14, 2013, 09:01:29 AM »

I installed one of these locking latches to my back rest. I tried to unlock it and it just now turns and the little locking pin/cam will not pop up to unlock.

Has this happened to anyone else and if so can the dealer unlock it? Both keys spin.

Or am I going to have to cut it off and if so will Harley replace it?

I hope you just got an unlucky latch cause I just installed this on my TP.    :'(.  Also, to get the barrel pin to pop up you really have to get it pushed in pretty far.  Try taking a small tool or something else that will help you push down on the pin and see if that helps it pop up.

Went to the dealer and I asked them to show me how to use the key. :D

After two different people attempted to unlock the latch they both agreed that is was defective. They gave me a new one but since the package now comes with 2 latches they gave them both to me.

Since they were getting ready to go home they told me to come back and they will remove the old one. I will remove it myself tomorrow.

To justify the empty package I handed over the 2 keys for the old latch and agreed to take the old one back after I remove it.

Some times the directions, are very misleading. Did you install the provided washer in the install?

If so, this will cause off set alignment of the latch, causing it to hit the black plastic lip of the rear 4 point docking hardware.

(I hope this makes sense.)

Oh yeah, If you did do this, it's a PIA to get the locking latch off the docking hardware.

Any tips on how to remove it?

Mano,

I put the locking latch on my tour pak. If you have the locking latch on your BSR sissybar it may very.

I installed the right hand locking latch on my tourpak, and kept the blk latch stock on the left side. I was just putting it on for size to see how it would fit and kept the screws on but not torque tight. Next thing I knew the damn locks were on there and I couldn't remove my tourpak.

I had to remove all 4 point attachments, the left hand stock black latch, call a buddy come help to raise my tourpak up as if he was removing the tourpak, take hammer and small piece of wood and bang the lock off. (I had to do this because the chrome latch part was hitting the lip of the black plastic docking part of the right rear connecting part) And not allowing the latch to completely come off the black plastic piece.

I was then able to take off the washer and re install everything back to normal. Now everything is working fine!

I hope this is what you are asking help on. Also, there maybe a easier way to get them off, but this is what I had to do to take them off with the washer installed.

Good Luck

No worries Yellowbird, Thanks.

It took less than 5 min to remove. I drilled it out. 2 different sizes about 1 cm from the stem of the pin. It then dropped out.

Which made me shake my head because if someone really wants it they can have it with a good cordless drill....ish.
