Took my Black/Charcoal in to FT Worth Harley yesterday for a new back tire. Getting ready for a Big Bend trip next week. Not my favorite dealer, but they are very close to my house and the service dept (Gary)  is OK.  Anyway, when I pulled up, I noticed another 06 just like mine in line for service. Looked fairly new as it still had the Syn3 stickers on it, but the thing I really noticed was a large black plastic box in place of the horn cover. Was it some kind of air horn? Curious if it belongs to anyone on this site. Has V&H true duals w/ovals and looked like a Clearview shield.  Also, there was a  Red SE RK in line for it's set up. Really nice looking bike. Would love to have those wheels/tires on my SEUC.

Is it possible that what you were seeing a fan?

I had a chrome fan on my '98 Roadking, but they stopped making the chrome ones and went to black only.  You sometimes see them on police bikes, but they are available through parts for our bike, too.  They are thermostatically controlled, black, effective, but extremely ugly.  I don't know if that is what you were looking at, but if so, you would have seen the outer round case of the fan mounted where the horn goes.  It almost reminds you of an air cleaner on each side of the motor...

No, not even close. I originallythought it might be a fan, but couldn't see any blades in there. This thing was approx 7" x 7" and basically was black plastic. To tell you the truth, since no claimed the bike here, it was ugly as chit. It was still there today when I picked my bike up.

 On my bike, they charged me $11.94 in "shop supplies" on top of the labor $90 to install the tire. I really hate seeing things like that on a bill. I would rather they just charged me $103 for the job. IMHO, stuff like that should be just the cost of doing business.

The bike is no good without tires (Gottcha) that's just the price of go unless you can change'em yourself

I know.  It's just more fun to have something to bitch about.

About the experience with these fans....

I installed one on my '98 Roadking because I pulled a trailer fairly often.  

The vibration of the motor caused the fan mounts to break twice.  A redesigned mount was issued, but you couldn't buy it separate from the whple fan.  My dealer managed to get me one somehow, due to the problems I had had with the fan.  (Nothing like a fan breaking loose going down the interstate).  I began to carry zip ties to re-attach the darn thing.

Effective.  Yes, the engine temperature was noticeably cooler, especially in slow traffic conditions, however, at 40,000 miles I still spun a bearing and had to replace the motor.  I might have had to anyway, and I think a cooler engine lasts longer, but its hard to tell if they are worth the money based on my experience.  I have not installed one on my last four bikes and doubt I will on any others, for what its worth.

This policy was going on at least 30 years ago. Dealer I worked at did it. Eventually they had a cease and desist order, as the "percentage of job cost" formula they were using was not accurate.

I am surprised this has never turned into a "consumer protection" issue. Business expenses are supposed to be figured in your markup and labor costs. And if a particular supply is used, eg brake cleaner, then you bill the customer. But to be charged a % of the job for, lets say, using the Safety Kleen parts washer, that may not have been used on the job at all smells like fraud.
