Older GPS on new 2012 radio
« on: May 07, 2013, 06:43:00 PM »

So my speakers keep cutting out on my 2008 which has the built in GPS.  My dealer says no problem as he has a radio sitting on the shelf that he can replace it with.  Well, turns out he can't get the GPS to function on this newer radio (came out of a 2012).  So now I'm waiting for another radio to be shipped in that has the GPS function.  Anybody know how this works.  Seems to me that they could hook it up to the DT or something and make it do it's thing.  I mean the radio has the NAV button on it.  Crazy how this electronics stuff works. BTW, I happen to like the way the GPS works despite the lack of current maps.  I know I'm going to get bashed for this, but my biggest complaint is that Harley don't support this GPS any longer.

The Nav module was discontinued in 2009.
In mid 2011, the internal Nav connector board was removed from the radio.
When your dealer "installed" the module into the 2012 unit, there was nothing for it to connect to.

Iron Cross Audio - Thanks for keeping us informed.  I can assure you, the next time I have a problem, the radio is coming to you.  Everything I've heard is good when it comes to the work you do.  The bike is still under the ESP and is the reason I didn't.  Now, I'm regretting that decision.  I'd have been out riding instead of waiting for number (4) radio to go in  :-\

Did the dealer even take the nav module out of the old radio?  Or did they assume it was just some internal function they all had?  If he didn't remove the module you might have lost it forever as the part is obsolete.

Twolane - The dealer says he put it in the new radio, but the way he said that, I felt something was amiss.  It was clear that they were not sure of the procedures.  They also wanted my disks thinking that they were needed.  Apparently, they placed a call somewhere and was told that the radio they were using would not work.  They were then going to overnight a correct radio and indicated that I would have the bike back today.  I talked to the them about this for quite awhile, and I remember they said something like they were sure they plugged in the GPS antenna to something???  So I would think the module was there.  It seems that HK shot themselves in the foot on this to me.  I'm all for saving money, but there must be thousands of bikes out there with this GPS in them and this only makes it harder to swap out the units should a problem like mine comes up.

As the story came out a few years ago it wasn't the OE manufacturer doing any foot shooting but Harley.  The OE would've gladly kept being paid to build the components.  Harley chose not to continue using/supplying GPS parts.  Without a customer to buy them the manufacturer obviously isn't going to continue making them.  So you can thank Mother Harley for the lack of continued support for the GPS system.
