HELP: Fuel gauge bouncing around, code b1004
« on: May 12, 2013, 06:42:12 PM »

While riding my 2010 FLHXSE yesterday, I noticed my fuel gauge started bouncing around -- going to full (even though I knew I had a half-tank left), then back to half, then back to full. Meanwhile, DTE reading starts going up, from 150 to 180 miles, even though I know I've got about 80-100 miles left. Looked at diag codes when got home and found B1004 under SPeedometer module. Part number 67516-09 listed behind code. That's speedometer, not fuel gauge. Anybody got a clue what's happening to my bike?  :(

Code B1004  is Fuel level sensor or wiring shorted low.  For proper testing I believe it's going to need a break out box.  Which would need to go to the dealer.  But one question I want to ask just for my benefit.  How old is the gas in the tank.  If no good fuel additive was used it may have have a type of corrosion on the sending unit.  You might try run the tank down and get some good gas in it and a fuel cleaner to run through it and give that a try it has been known to work on cars.  But if your in warranty it's up to you.

When you pull up the diagnostic codes using the speedometer module (odometer window), you can pull up all the various types of codes.  The SP thing doesn't mean it's a speedometer problem.

B1004 is Fuel Level Sender Low, which indicates the sending unit resistance is out of it's normally expected range on the low side.  B1005 is the opposite, Fuel Level Sender High/Open.  I'm just guessing, but you may have an intermittent short circuit.

Has any work been done to the bike recently that could have disturbed the wiring for the fuel gauge, sending unit, etc.?  If so, go back over the work that was done and look for damaged wiring or connectors.  There is a diagnostic routine in the Electrical Diagnostic Manual if you have one or can borrow one; I don't have a late model version so I can't give you the exact routine.  As Tweeter13 mentioned, you may need to take it to a qualified electrical tech to run the diagnostics if you aren't equipped to do so.

Thanks to both grc and tweeter13.  You both have convinced me to take it to a dealer for a better diagnosis.  The swinging fuel gauge does look like an intermittent short somewhere.  No work has been done on the bike for some time.  I changed the oil and oil filter myself recently and noticed nothing.  The gas in the tank is only about two months old, and unlike most, I do use Liquid Horsepower in EVERY tank, so I'm fairly comfortable that the gas is OK.  I do appreciate your enlightening me on B1004 code.  That's a good sign that I've got a short in the fuel sensor somewhere.  I did notice a post over in hdforums.com from a guy who just bought a new fuel gauge for $60 from the motor company, put it on and had no further trouble. The fault in the gas sensor wiring would have both effects -- the swinging fuel gauge and that would affect the DTE reading, making it run up erroneously.

After the dealer diagnosis, I'll let you know what they determine.  You guys helped me understand it enough that I know it's beyond my ability and time to fix it, and for that, I am appreciative.

Local Chunky River HD dealer in nearby Meridian checked my fuel level sensor low (B1004) code and then checked the wiring harness from the fuel sensor to a connection under the seat near the fuse panel. It was an open circuit. The wire had stretched and broken apart. It carries 7V to the sensor. Service tech knew exactly which wire to check because he's seen it before.  He said a brand new bike came in from Harley with the exact same broken wire, and it hadn't even been sold yet. He ordered a new fuel sensor wiring harness for me ($20), and didn’t charge for the diagnosis even. I asked him to mail the harness to me and I’ll put it on under the console on top of the tank. Good outcome.
