110" Engine ticking sound?
« on: August 28, 2006, 06:29:45 PM »

I just bought a new 07'SE ultra and was wondering if it's normal to hear a ticking sound from the motor?  Not  very loud like a rapping but more of a ticking.  Im used to metric bikes which sound like sewing machines so please excuse my ignorance for asking.

Yep, it is normal. I have 1k miles now and it is still doing it. After changing the exhaust you cannot hear it anymore. Same goes for the fifth gear noise everyone is complaining about. Don't be surprised if the bike dies on you when giving it gas from idle. My bike did it a few times, it would burp and die which made me very upset. I changed the exhaust, air filter, and downloaded a map with a SERT and it has been running perfectly !!!!

- Spend weeks finding an expensive limited production motorcycle.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

- Getting the motorcycle and paying retail price of $33,495 for it.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

- Bringing the motorcycle home and all your friends wish they had one and hate you.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

- The bike dies out at an intersection and you almost drop it in front of all your friends.............PRICELESS

When I was in Sturgis, I noticed aticking sound  in my '05 much like a lifter noise about 3K. Was in the event and ask Rob  with the CVO team I believe his name was if the 103's were any noiser than any of the other Twin Cam's and he said " shouldn't be" So I rode an '07 SEEG.... it was noiser than my '05...I thought HMMMMM... and rode it back to Dallas 80-90 all the way. Dont' hear the noise anymore. My diagnosis>>> Ride it like ya stole it and it's gonna rattle evey now and then>>>>> Greg

My valvetrain is loud and clicky ticky as hell! (Clicky ticky is an esoteric engineering term most normal folks just don"t know about ;))

As others have said it is what it is. It is a 100 year old design of an air cooled V-Twin. It is not a water cooled sewing machine flat 6. Therein is where the beauty lies.

If it bugs you that much you may want to go back to another engine design but this one is inherently clicky ticky.

Just have a good time and ride it. Remember, when you are dead its for a really long time.

I think the MOCO should put that term in the owners manual!!!!!!!

My 07 is a bit louder in the tappets than my previous, but that is ofcourse with quieter pipes than previous as well....

Get louder pipes....turn up the radio....it all works :)

Whew! I sure am glad my scoot sounds the same as everybody elses.  I replaced 05 RKC with by new 07 B&O.

My old bike had V&H system (header and true duals) and never heard any of these noises I've heard on my new scoot.

Sometimes the racket sounds like I'm running regular grade gas!  I've got about 3k on my bike (picked it up 9/1) and the tranny noise has quieted down (also running AMSoil in all three holes) - and 5th still has a different sound than the others.

I'm leaning to make the following changes based on what I've heard so far from you experts:

1) V&H full system (07 true duals with o2 sensors and oval slipons)
2) K&N filter (I like the 110 football)
3) Thundermax full closed loop system.

and also turning up XM on my Hogtunes so I dont hear the engine lifters...

One last question,  what is the effect of adding a 575 cam?

Thanks,

Mark

For what it's worth, here is my experience with a "ticking" sound with my 103".
