Slight Wobble in Turns
« on: May 07, 2013, 07:12:35 AM »

A few weeks ago, I hit a massive pothole with my '07 Springer - luckily, only about a half mile from home. Shook every bone in my body. Tire didn't go flat, but I got an instant "death wobble". Had the dealer pick up my bike - needed a new back tire anyway. So, the dealer checks everything out, readjusts the springer, checks the front wheel and says all is okay and within tolerances - and replaces the front and rear tire. Although the tire did not go flat, the dealer says the impact busted cords in the tire. Got the bike back about a week or so later, but it just didn't feel right. I realized the scary little skip from the rear was the new back tire and would soon disappear. But, I'm still getting an oh so slight wobble from the front when I accelerate into a turn. I put the bike up on a jack and checked for play in the neck. No noise, grinding or wobble at all, but, it just seems like it turns a little more freely than I remember - could just be in my head. I don't ever remember getting this feeling from previous front tire replacements. Am I just being paranoid? Like I said - the whole thing just doesn't feel right

Thanks. I think I'm gonna take it back to the dealer. They said they checked everything and took it for a test ride & said it was fine. I had it out again today and it just doesn't feel fine to me. I took it up to 75-80mph and it seems a bit abnormal, maybe even slightly hairy. No wobble - just doesn't seem comfortable. Went into a turn at about 50, excellerating as I went in and still feel that little skip-type wobble just momentarily. I've had this bike up well over 100mph many a time and never felt uncomfortable there before. Maybe I'm just getting too old or worrying too much!!!!   :P

I would have it checked until it is right. Having the dealership ride the bike is far different from you knowing how it feels. I can sense those things in my rides as well. The new tire could be slightly out of balance or you could have damaged the wheel and have a slight wobble in that and is more noticeable at higher speeds and fast cornering. That would drive me crazy. Definitely get that fixed

I have had new tires give me some funny feelings myself.  Getting that newness off the sides has always been a concern for me as well.   But if it don't feel right I would take it back.  You don't want to lay it down on any turn.  Then you will have a lot more to deal with than just a funny feeling when turning.   Don't want that funny feeling in the tush when you sit from road rash either.

It seems to have rectified itself. I can only attribute it to the new tires, although I don't remember ever having this issue with new tire replacement in the past (except for the rear - replaced more often and definitely noticeable 'til it wears in a bit!). A lot could have been psychological knowing that I did hit so hard and had that bad wobble before I had the tires replaced and front-end checked out.
