phato1, I'm really happy that you got things taken care of so well.  I once made a warranty claim just days before it expired, and the feeling of relief was something akin to sex.   ??? :P ::)

Scott, I hope you come back to this thread and see this.  I agree that I used the term piston slap without knowing for sure that was what actually made the noise.  I was told it was piston slap by two mechanics, so I went with the flow.  I do know that when I replaced the cylinders and pistons, the noise almost disappeared; still hear it a little when it's cold around 1900-2100 rpm.  It sure would be nice if some one could post video clips with the sounds of certain conditions.

We use a metric ton of Wiseco pistons here.
On one occasion last spring we had a clients(Allan) cylinders to bore that sat on top of an S&S 4.500" stroker kit.
We KNOW how this individual runs his bike, so I specifically set the piston/wall clearence towards the top part of the suggested running clearance for that Wiseco(S&S)piston from S&S's instructions.
It was .0047", to have "Anti-Al" clearence.
The engine, to this day, does not have a noise.
The piston "slapping" term has an aggressive tone to it, and makes the user of that term, to those in earshot, sound extremely authoritative, but that is usually where it ends, at least in my opinion........ ;D

If it had gone the other way and ended up costing me more money and down time it would've felt like a whole different kind of sex. :o

I guess the other lesson is if you think something is "slapping" around in the engine you might want to investigate the noise further. I know I've learned my lesson and will get out the stethoscope to chase down noises in the future before making any assumptions that could prove costly.

Scott - would lateral(side to side) play in the tappet roller assembly possibly be the root cause of the noise - and the failure?  Not that it matters much at this point as the original pieces are on the way back to HD since it was a warranty repair, but I would be interested in your opinion on this.

Thanks for posting this Phato1. I parked mine in Sept with around 6000 miles on the clock and the 2 year expires June 5th but I got the ESP from Kutter. Guess I better have them come pick it up to take a look and also change out the pipes when they arrive. Wish I wasn't such a nervous twit about this warranty stuff, I really wanna put different cams in it or do the Doc thing with flowed heads and stay with the tractor cams. I guess either route could void the ESP.

Bear in mind if it's not making any "strange" noises the exploratory labor will probably be billed to you - that is unless they find something wrong in there. Like I posted before mine was making a noise at certain RPM's that I mistakenly assumed was something other than a valve train issue. As far as the ESP goes from what has been posted in other threads, depending on the alignment of the stars even the pipe and tune could void the contract.
