Front end wobble after putting on a 21"
« on: May 18, 2013, 11:08:08 AM »

Hello,

After putting on a 21" Renegade front wheel, I have developed a wobble at around 30-35 mph.  I don't recall having this before changing sizes.  I also went with a single side rotor,  lowered the front end 1".  Would you adjust the swing the same way, or would it need to be compensated for the new changes.

Thanks,

Glide Boy

I put a 21" on my SECU and it rode much better than stock without any adjustments. Don't see how the single rotor would change anything, but ???. Is it severe? Balance should be felt through the entire range. Not much help I know.  :nixweiss:

Tire balance, tire pressure, Fall away (I run mine on the tight side, just my preference), rear tire pressure... all simple and easy to check.

I would also check wheel and tire run out both side to side and in and out in case there is a slight defect in the tire.  The  wheel may have also been damaged slightly in shipping.   Bearing adjustments,  there are quite a few things tha could be doing this.  This might sound a little stupid.  But you might pull the front fender if you replaced it and ride it real quick on a pretty clean road.  By moving the angle og things makes them shake until they get steady also.  Weird things happen with aerodynamics.  But take you time and check and double check all of your torque on things as well.  You don't want something falling off.  Good luck.  And hope it something real simple that just got over looked.

Can I safely assume you're talking about a Road Glide?  If so, a 30-35 mph wobble, especially on deceleration, has been a pretty common complaint since '09 even when completely stock.  Harley first had a mistake in production using the wrong steering head bearing preload spec and a too low torque spec on the adjustment lock nut.  Even after those things were supposedly corrected in production the complaints persisted.  Since you have changed the dynamics of the front end when you changed the tire/brake/wheel combination, you probably do need to revisit the steering head bearing preload.

I wouldn't just assume this is the problem however.  The advice you've received about checking the entire installation and the radial and lateral runout and balance of the new components is excellent advice.

I'll assume you installed a new rim as well. New or used? Solid or spoke? The last thread I read on this, the guy never checked air pressure, Just saying.
