Can't Tighten HD Passenger Backrest Pad. Got a Fix?
« on: June 19, 2013, 08:19:54 PM »

2011 Street Glide w/ standard size HD passenger backrest & sissy bar.

No matter how much I try to tighten this piece of junk, it's still loose on the sissy bar and slides down.

Bought the beefier HD 'tri-bar' looking bracket, same nonsense. Not only that, the bolts that came with the new, sexy bracket seem to be a different thread size.

Loosing patience, stripping threaded inserts.

Anyone care to help?

Thanks

Do you have a picture of the components you are using?  Almost sounds like you have one of the backrest pads for an earlier model.  They dont fit the same.

Also, I just had a similar problem on my 2010.  The spacers that fit between the pad and mount were too long.  I actually just took them out and it tighten right up.  I may try to shorten them or may just leave them out.

Sometime to look at is the length of the spacer in the back rest. Ran in to a similar problem when I took an old pad that came off my 06 Street Glide and tried to install it on my 09. Bolts would tighten up and the mount would be tight but the whole assy would slide up and down the upright. If that is what you are seeing remove the pad and with a pair of needle nose pull the spacers our of the pad , if I remember right they are somewhere around a 1/4 in dia by like a 1/2 long give or take a little. Using a grinder, belt sander or what ever else you have shorten those spacers till you get a tight fit on the upright. Been a while but if I remember right they ended up just about flush with the pad in the bottom of the radius where the upright fits.
