OZ road trip
« on: May 15, 2013, 01:37:31 PM »

Esteemed CVO Folks,

I made it to the Southern Hemisphere for the first time and Australia for the first time. After doing business in Melbourne, I flew up to a more comfortable Gold Coast. Highly recommend this place. The town I stayed in is called Surfer's Paradise. I have an old buddy over there. He, of course, has a Harley. I rented a Fatboy. A bit pricey but worth it for the experience.

Here is a picture to help entice you all to travel to this great place. Riding was very nice indeed. Left hand riding is easy enough. Nice hills and curves and traffic was good.

Riding in the land of Oz. Follow the Gold Coast Road!

Sounds like a great time.  On our list to visit Australia and New Zealand at some point.  My dad worked over there for almost a year back in 1997 and had a blast.  Country was beautiful and the locals were a hoot to be around.  He really didn't want to come home.... :2vrolijk_21:

Carl
nice pic , looks like that was up in the Hinterland behind the Coast or Northern NSW round Byron Bay ?
There are some awesome roads there , that's about 4 or 5 hours from my home .
Did you find the Road quality a bit average though?
Glad you had a great time  :2vrolijk_21:
Cheers Dave

That would be the lookout on the Pacific Highway behind Byron Bay by the look of it. I rode past there twice last weekend on a run to the Gold Coast from home town of Port Macquarie. It is a beautiful part of the world.

Hi Dave,

yes the roads were a bit average with some grooves in the corners. It did not get in the way though. The funnest part of the ride was from Lismore to Nimbin. We also averaged 130 kms/hr on the Gold Coast highway. I will be back in September and will look into another ride, perhaps a wee bit longer, maybe over to Russell Crowe's bar.

The cost of the rental was average I'd say. The added cost was they only allowed 300 kms per day. That is quite limiting and I put on 450 kms. I will prepare more and hope to find a deal where I can really exercise the roads on my next trip. I will do a multi day rental next time around and get in some touring.

I believe the location described is correct. My mate lives in Surfer's paradise and we headed south to Byron Bay then inland.

Ride safe all!

Carl
