Vibration Sound
« on: June 07, 2013, 10:18:16 PM »

I recently made two changes to my 2011 SG, added 570 Chubbies, and changed to Harley's 6" scooped, like Clcokwerks, windshield. I have a sound coming from my front end, not sure if it's the tire or what, when I'm in a curve going at least 35 m.p.h. and it's a woooooo sound. I have an extension ladder on my van and when I get up to about 45 m.p.h. I have a similiar sound. Anyone know what may be causing it. I replaced the front tire about 5,000 miles ago, Dunlop, and it looks to have no "flat spots". I know it's not much info, but I don't trust the local dealership for advice. Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks

Its easy to change windshields....put the old one back on and listen again....try one thing at a time untill you find what is causing the sound

Thanks I'll give that a try tomorrow. I'm just hoping when I took of the fairing to replace the handlebars I didn't screw something up which is causing the sound. So hard to pinpoint where it's coming from.

You might now be hearing the sidewall tread form the rear tire. I had a similar issue when I change to a Freedom Shield. It took me a while to realize where the sound came from.

:2vrolijk_21:    The tipoff is in the second sentence of the original post ("when I'm in a curve going at least 35 m.p.h. and it's a woooooo sound".   It's unlikely you would need to be in a curve if it was caused by the windshield change.  It could be the tire, which is fairly common, or possibly wheel bearings, or even the rear belt, or  :nixweiss:.  Noises can be a real beotch to diagnose on a bike.  Good luck.

How do you like the Chubbies?  Gotta change my bars ASAP.  The stock ones are killing my left shoulder.

Well the dealership solved my noise problem. It was my rear tire, which was at 4/32", not a very safe ride!!! With the extended saddlebags on the CVO I just never really look at my rear tire tread, covered up by the saddlebags. I check tire pressure regularly but failed to pay attention to the tread. I actually had 18,000 on that puppy. I'm really lucky I took it in because I'm getting ready to ride up into Canada and then down into Montana to do Beartooth, for those of you who know that greatest of rides. I could have sworn the noise was from the fairing or front tire, but riding home is was quiet, except for music once I was convinced it was gone. Thanks for the help.  I love my Chubby's. I'm 5'7" with a 31" inseam, and a Corbin solo close reach. No more reaching and the thicker bars made fishing the wires through much easier. The clutch line was just barely long enough, everything else was fine. Definite

18k miles!!   I think you did very well on the tire. I know when my rear tires needs replacing, they make some wild noise too.   Replace that rear tire and its gone  :).  Glad you solved that one.  Stuart.

Actually 4/32" tread depth isn't officially worn out (that would be 1/32" per the tire manufacturer).  Since the new tire measures about 10/32", still having 4/32" after 18k miles is pretty amazing.

So with the Chubbies I don't have to replace any cables right?

Depends on the height Chubby you get. CVOSTU has 575 Chubby and I don't think you need to change cables but they may need to be rerouted. The 575 brings the grips closer to the rider. I have the 578 which are 2.5" taller then stock and I had to replace brake and clutch lines.  Check out the website for Wild Ones handle bars.  BTW, I love the bars.
