It's either Ride or Run to the Heartland. I had posted a link in the Events-General section but the link is gone now that the event is over. It's held about this time each year--this is only the third year. The first year, 2004, it was pretty much a bust because of the back to back hurricanes at about the same time. 2005 had a good turnout and I was told that about twice as many folks showed up for 2006. Nice, low key event with non-stop live music, food, vendors, events, safe riding demonstrations and bike show.
I went right by the entrance to the Sebring race course on the way into town but didn't stop. I hear that there's a nice hotel and restaurant out there and people can go out there any time they want--just not on the track itself, as there is nnearly always some activity there. Testing, time trials, club races, major events. I'm going to have to get back up there and check it out--legendary place.
For me, the ride up was nice, too. Highway 98 from Okeechobee to Sebring is quite pretty with little traffic. You're going slightly uphill as you travel northwest towards the "spine" of Florida (there actually are some hills down here).
I think Sebring is a really pretty town. Laid out in a series of radiating circles around a park. Beautiful old homes around Lake Jackson. Hey, maybe you could retire there and take up racing again. I'll be your pit crew. Between the two of us we probably remember enough about Austin Healeys and all.....well, on second thought...
Funny you mention Steve McQueen. I'm about halfway through a book about him right now, and it talks about his involvement in big-time racing. Apparently in the early 1960's, he had to make a choice between acting and racing--he was good enough to be offered a driving slot on a GP team. What a choice, huh?!
